The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2016
The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2016 | Amy Stewart, Tim Folger
Science writers get into the game with all kinds of noble, high-minded ambitions. We want to educate. To enlighten, notes guest editor Amy Stewart in her introduction to The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2016. But at the end of the day, were all writers . . . Were here to play for the folks. The writers in this anthology brought us the years highest notes in the genre. From a Pulitzer Prizewinning essay on the earthquake that could decimate the Pacific Northwest to the astonishing work of investigative journalism that transformed the nail salon industry, this is a collection of hard-hitting and beautifully composed writing on the wonders, dangers, and oddities of scientific innovation and our natural world. The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2016 includes Kathryn Schulz, Sarah Maslin Nir, Charles C. Mann, Oliver Sacks, Elizabeth Kolbert, Gretel Ehrlich, and others

Pickpick

Amy Stewart assembled a wonderful collection of science reporting where the narrative is just as important as the science behind it. Many of these pieces show how we have seriously impacted the planet and environment and at least four pieces specific to issues affecting women. (And yes, the Oliver Sacks piece made me cry)

If you did not read this two-part article when it originally appeared in The NY Times, this is a must-read (Part Two, which has more science/medicine is included in this collection, Part One deals more with the cultural and immigration issues surrounding these salons). It will make you think twice about the ethics of certain nail salons.

I immediately thought of @Liberty and @rebeccaschinsky (for reasons 😜😜 - the essay is super-good, too, and I hope HMH sent them review copies)

Y'all, Amy Stewart wrote the best introduction to an @hmhbooks Science and Nature volume I have ever read. And the range of topics and writing styles she has chosen...this is going to be a fantastic collection (and I've read a few of these pieces when they originally published and SPOT ON selections). #bestamerican
