The Old Gringo
The Old Gringo: A Novel | Carlos Fuentes
6 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In The Old Gringo, Carlos Fuentes brings the Mexico of 1916 uncannily to life. This novel is wise book, full of toughness and humanity and is without question one of the finest works of modern Latin American fiction. One of Fuentes's greatest works, the novel tells the story of Ambrose Bierce, the American writer, soldier, and journalist, and of his last mysterious days in Mexico living among Pancho Villa's soldiers, particularly his encounter with General Tomas Arroyo. In the end, the incompatibility of the two countries (or, paradoxically, their intimacy) claims both men, in a novel that is, most of all, about the tragic history of two cultures in conflict.

Also in March: evolving circumstances allowed / required me to accelerate my plan to move out a piece of furniture and relocate this little bookcase in its place. In the process I folded my #readordonate books back into the general TBR shelf and decided to donate the tagged book unread.

Magazines to be read are on the bottom shelf and stacked on the side. On top of the magazines are the “outbox” for books and a box for the Real Simple cards.

Pickpick

So conflicted about this one. One second I was marveling at the beautiful writing, then I was bored, then confused, then intrigued--and this cycle continued. Interesting idea: the fictional story of journalist and writer Ambrose Bierce who travels to Mexico apparently to die by joining Pancho Villa's rebellion. The real-life Bierce disappeared and no one knows what happened. This is a dreamy and philosophical explanation: I liked it just barely.

Leftcoastzen It‘s funny , read it years ago and share many of your feelings about it. 5y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen Yeah, it was a weird read- I kept feeling like I was in the verge of embracing or dismissing it. Really unique though- maybe if I read another Fuentes it will help clarify my feelings a bit. 5y
Leftcoastzen I read a Fuentes I really liked , straining my brain to remember.. 5y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen This one seems to be the most popular on Goodreads. 5y

#bookhaul from a lovely used bookshop I just met today in Madison, NJ - The Chatham Bookseller. Great selection, and is it weird for me to think that the louder the floorboards creak, the better the experience? There was also a cute new bookstore on the same street that I would have had a 2nd book haul from if I had more time. A small town to have two bookshops- I wish that was still a normal thing, but most towns in this area don't even have one.

Leftcoastzen Love Old Gringo! The other 2 , on TBR forever. 5y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen Oh good! I never read Fuentes before and this shop had about five to choose from- they all sounded good. 5y
Cathythoughts I don‘t know if I ever read Carlos Fuentes ... just looked him up & he has written quite a few , will be interested to hear your take on him ... I love this title 5y

saresmoore I totally agree re: floorboards. I also think it‘s good security for the (typically solo) bookseller behind the counter. 5y
Billypar @Cathythoughts I love discovering new authors- all three pictured are firsts for me. I have to remind myself sometimes to go back and read more from the ones I like! 5y
Billypar @saresmoore Very true- though it would have to be a particularly heartless robber to steal from the kind elderly woman tending the store who discounted my already cheap books! 5y

From a second-hand bookstore, inscribed by the author 'To Tedi, from his pal Carlos Fuentes'... I would love to know who Tedi is! High on my #TBR ... #mexicanwriters #MayBookFlowers

LeahBergen And why Tedi got rid of it! I always wonder about this when I find signed and inscribed books. 7y
Abailliekaras @LeahBergen I know! And Adelaide is a long way from Mexico ... 🤔 7y

I bought this second-hand, #signed by the author "To (?)Tedi, from his pal Carlos Fuentes."
Reading the blurb, it's about Mexico and the United States and 'the tragic history of these two cultures in conflict'. I think I'll have to move it up the TBR pile... ? #ReadJanuary
