The History of Great Things
The History of Great Things: A Novel | Elizabeth Crane
A witty and irresistible story of a mother and daughter regarding each other through the looking glass of time, grief, and forgiveness. In two beautifully counterpoised narratives, two womenmother and daughtertry to make sense of their own lives by revisiting what they know about each other. The History of Great Things tells the entwined stories of Lois, a daughter of the Depression Midwest who came to New York to transform herself into an opera star, and her daughter, Elizabeth, an aspiring writer who came of age in the 1970s and 80s in the forbidding shadow of her often-absent, always larger-than-life mother. In a tour de force of storytelling and human empathy, Elizabeth chronicles the events of her mothers life, and in turn Lois recounts her daughters storypulling back the curtain on lifelong secrets, challenging and interrupting each other, defending their own behavior, brandishing or swallowing their pride, and, ultimately, coming to understand each other in a way that feels both extraordinary and universal. The History of Great Things is a novel about a mother and daughter who are intimately connected and not connected enough; it will make readers laugh and cry and wonder how we become the adults we always knew we shouldeven if were not always adults our parents understand.

I loved this unique look at the mother daughter relationship. They tell not only their stories but each others stories. Full of regrets, love, pain, exaggerations and sarcasm . Wonderfully written but sometimes it took me a bit to understand whose story i was in. Maybe that's the point. Different story yet the same story. Forever intertwined ❤❤❤❤

Mehso-so

So-so.. I read pieces of it here and there, and finally wrapped up today. Written in a different way that I thought was an interesting approach to a 'fictional memoir'

Having a lazy Saturday morning read with this big fella (who would prefer to be outside in the mud from last night's storm). PS this book's prose is 👌🏻

Our 21-day pick tells the story of aspiring writer Elizabeth & her opera singer mother Lois in an entwined & unique narrative structure. The pair examines the stories they've told to each other, the lives they've lived together & apart, & the ways in which they do & do not understand one another.

Donna_sBookMinute Sounds like an enjoyable read. 8y
Well-ReadNeck Weirdly, I seem to be hearing about an inordinate number of books with opera singers in them. Curious. 8y

THIS BOOK IS slowly breaking my heart and I absolutely love it. Would love to hug my Mom tight and let her know I love her- but I'm afraid she may take advantage 🤔 of my emotional state and talk me into doing a million things for her 😂😂 she may win..

Chie I've seen this a few times in the bookstore and toyed with the idea of buying it but I've never really studied it (aka checked reviews and excerpts). These quotes has made me re-think it. Will definitely look for it when we go to the bookstore today. 8y

Crane does it again--masterful structure, masterful voice, masterfully inventive narrative.

"So much like the relationship they're borne of, Crane's deeply realized mother-daughter inventions are therapeutic and ruthless, heartfelt and crushing. A lovely exercise in the wild, soothing wonders of imagination." —Booklist ?
