Mehso-so

An OK quick read. The plot is paced well, and is captivating enough. It's lacking, however, in a few areas. There's a sad lack of dialogue, which is important for reading intentions. The characters aren't very three-dimensional, though somewhat lifelike. Lastly, it lacks opportunities for inference. All development is told directly, rather than left for the reader to discover. If you're looking for a short, decently satisfying read, I'd recommend.

Pickpick

The characters were all well-hewn, incredibly human. The plot was completely unpredictable at most times. Every scene was painted beautifully. There was amazing depth of thought, and heavy religious themes. I didn't love the ending, and at many times the relationship between Jane and Mr. Rochester was disturbing, but all in all it was of a quality that can only be admired.

There were a lot of amazing quotes i loved, but my wifi was out while reading the book. Gotta say, though, the ending disappointed me. I would much rather have seen her slowly fall for St. John Rivers. I don't think her relationship with Mr. Rochester was healthy at all...

Is it just me, or is it really frustrating when the characters suddenly start having French dialogue? Call me lazy but i don't want to suddenly start typing conversations into Google Translate.

Wives and Daughters | Elizabeth Gaskell
Pickpick

It was amazing and captivated me from the beginning. The characters were so deep: for once I wasn't able to predict the ending, and all of my first impressions of people were sadly wrong. My warning, however: Mrs. Gaskell died before writing the last chapter, which leaves you VERY unsatisfied. So I'd only recommend for a Gaskell scholar or a scholar of that particular setting.
