The Dutch House | Ann Patchett
Pickpick

Riveting read. Was struck by the lack of likeable female protagonists characters. Maeve, Andrea and Elma were all self absorbed and manipulative. I did love Sandy and Jocelyn though. I thought they were a great addition to the story and helped move the plot along well. Would definitely recommend as an easy read.

Carrie | Stephen King
Pickpick

Not really scary but I thoroughly enjoyed it and listened through it in a day.

Kids can definitely be cruel and an abusive mother is not helpful. I really sympathized with Carrie and was glad she got to finally express herself in the end (even if she killed a few people). Kinda shows the merits of therapy imo.

Fantastic eyeopening book on race and race relations. A definite read, especially for people who are trying to educate themselves on this topic.

So let's fix this, goddamn it, and move on to bitching about something else.

And if you don't want mental wellness to remain the purview of the privileged, if you don't want poverty to doom people to debilitating anguish, you need to cover pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy like you mean it. Universally. For everyone.

Such a great depiction of what depression feels like.

A great unflinching look at the mental health system in Canada. It's focus is on depression treatment through the lense of an investigative journalist's personal experiences.

Pet Sematary | Stephen King
Mehso-so

I found the depictions of grief and death really interesting and well written. The characters were interesting and engaging. However, as King himself describes this as his scariest book, I think I was expecting more suspense and fear. Although, I am not a parent, so perhaps that had something to do with my feelings... I definitely recommend reading it and drawing your own conclusions!

I completely understand why this book is a literary classic. It was compelling and desperately sad. The commentaries on class, race and capacity were provoking. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Sharp Objects | Gillian Flynn

As someone with dissociative anxiety this was an incredibly impactful and relatable quote.

"I'm here, I said, and it felt shockingly comforting, those words. When I'm panicked, I say them aloud to myself. I'm here. I don't usually feel that I am."

Sharp Objects: A Novel | Gillian Flynn
Pickpick

A great thriller and suspense novel that takes you along for all the twists and turns you would except out of a fictional crime novel. Flynn did a fantastic job developing characters and highlighting mental health in a novel with a strong but struggling female protagonist. I listened to this as an audio book in a single day purely because I needed to know for sure which of my suspicions were true.

Full circle, he thought while the final lethargy crept into his limbs. Full circle. A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever.
