That moment when you've been up since 4am and can't get back to sleep, decide to pick up a random book only to discover that your ARC is actually signed and has a cute bookmark inside. Score!

Half Lost | Sally Green

This book is trying to kill me by way of ripping my heart out and throwing it on the ground. Listening to it by audio seems to make it especially brutal.

Pickpick

An amazing, chaotic, heartstring pulling ride. Fell even deeper in love with the antics of Kaz and his merry band of misfits. They made me laugh, cry, bite all my nails off and tear my hair out. And I relished every second of it. No Mourners. No Funerals.

Crooked Kingdom | Leigh Bardugo

"I would come for you," Kaz said. "I would come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together - knives drawn, pistols blazing." Dying slowly in my heart!!!!

bmsddk I loved this part too! 8y
Tracinator So many quotable bits in both Six of Crows and this one! 8y
bmsddk Agreed! Bookmarking them all means something on almost every page 😜 How are you enjoying it so far? 7y

Tracinator Yeah, my copy is riddled with post its. I just finished the book about an hour ago. A chaotic and enjoyable read. Sad about how some things ended. Overjoyed at how others ended. Giant book hangover beginning to settle in. So good though! 7y
bmsddk I would love to chat about the book with you if you'd like ☺ It does leave quite the book hangover! 7y
Tracinator Have you finished it as well? I'd love a good chat/vent to get some of my feels out, haha. Not sure how to do that on Litsy though, beyond this comment thread... Ideas? 7y
bmsddk That would be great, I have finished it (and am rereading it, haha)! Next to the send button on comments, there is a skull. Press that, and it hides the comment as a spoiler-- to see it, you click on the comment. 7y
bmsddk Where would you like to start chatting and venting? Inej's rescue? Jesper's dad? Matthias' death 😭😭😭? Anyplace else in the Ketterdam adventure? 7y
bmsddk @Tracinator Oh, also, to make comment chats easier, you can tag a person by typing out their user name after the @ so they get notified ☺ Because I'm commenting on your post, you still get notified whether I tag you or not! 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk Thanks for the info, that is all super helpful! I'm a brand new Litsy user and I haven't found it very intuitive so far. Let's start with Matthias' death and get that hot mess out of the way. I didn't believe it was real until I turned the last page. Figured it must be some trick, like how they pulled it off with Kuwei. Like perhaps to free him of the persecution of the fjerdans if they thought he was dead. 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk Matthias & Nina just started to work their whole deal out with each other and he finally, truly changed his perspective on Grisha. They were going to change the world. It completely broke my heart into a million pieces. 7y
bmsddk You're welcome, feel free to ask any other Litsy questions -- I'm kind of new, but happy to help! 7y
bmsddk Hot mess is right. With all the punches pulled, it seemed like there should have been a way for him to be healed 😢 Nina working with a Corporalki, maybe...something! And shot by a novice! What did you think about how he died? 7y
bmsddk The tragic irony is that just as Matthias was finally honouring life, he dies just as Nina is discovering death. Those dreams of his had me really worried about that couple from early on. 7y
bmsddk Oh, I hadn't thought about that possible angle about faking his death to be free of the Fjerdans! That would have been much happier than this, even though bittersweet. 7y
Tracinator I know this is a duology, so this specific story is done. However, I'm not sure if there are planned/expected novels set in this world. Maybe it is a possibility there could be a reappearance of Nina & Matthias. 7y
bmsddk I didn't notice that detail, I really hope so. It would at least make for a lovely short story. Don't know if you've read the Grisha Trilogy, so I don't want to spoil it, but there were some people whose living statuses were marked differently than how they ended up. 7y
bmsddk You're right, it is strange how one of the best warriors gets killed by a novice child. My only explanation is that his shock of being found threw him off. Maybe he also saw himself mirrored in the child, which clouded his judgement. What do you think? 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk When I was trying to edit my comment to tag you I accidentally deleted it. Boo. I thought Bardugo went a bit light on details of Matthias getting shot, etc. It made me instantly suspicious. Like either something was up or she got antsy writing the ending. In the back of the book there is a Cast of Characters. Anyone who died had (deceased) next to their name. Except Matthias. Clue? Coincidence? Attempt to reduce spoilers? 7y
bmsddk No problem! Most of the time she went light on details was when she pulled out a trick. Maybe she did that this time to trick us into thinking there would be a trick 😳 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk I have read the Grisha trilogy but don't remember noticing or reading something about character status at the end. I do agree though..I think Matthias becoming enlightened and wanting to change things, along with seeing himself in that child, completely contributed to his untimely end. 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk Right?! I felt like I've developed this Pavlovian response to how something is going to go down by how Bardugo sets us up. 7y
bmsddk Alina is listed as deceased; Nikolai & Sturmhond have seperate entries. Both are true and not true. Maybe it's the same for Matthias! Hopefully it's not just to avoid spoilers for people. It's a bit heroic how he dies--defending that which he's learning is right (when he calls Nina's new ability a gift even though she's horrified 💔). But it also leaves a somber message that changing for the better kills. Though that is offset by Kaz and Inej! 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk Kaz & Inej. Even if it wasn't befitting the story, these two characters or their relationship, I really wanted some epic get together scene at the end. It ended perfectly, can't imagine it any different, but my hopes were a bit higher than they should be. Unrealistic romantic optimism in fictional characters, haha! How did you feel about how their story played out? 7y
bmsddk What do you think of Nina's transformation. Good, bad, both, neither? 7y
bmsddk I absolutely LOVED how Kaz's and Inej's story played out! It was actually everything I hoped for and more, haha. I daresay they're one of the most romantic couples I've read. The power of simply a touch means so much more than the most physical interactions of most people. Fighting to open up to each other their utter vulnerabilities. Kaz fighting to give Inej everything she dreams. Inej fighting to find the beautiful humanity buried in Kaz. 7y
bmsddk Kaz and Inej have a profound romance often expressed in chilling ways. What were some of your favourite interactions between the two? 7y
bmsddk Pavlovian response...perfect description of how she manipulates the reader 😂👏 7y
Tracinator I thought Nina's transformation was humbling for her. To lose her powers & have to find her footing again. Didn't really seem good or bad to me. After finishing the book it seemed like a bit of a plot device since the series was over. If we aren't going to learn more about why things changed once she beat her addiction and jurda parem was out of her system, I didn't really see the point. It could have made more sense for her to remain powerless. 7y
bmsddk Perhaps another series in the Grishaverse could address the after-effects of parem in more detail? Kind of like how SoC addressed the aftermath of Grisha spread out everywhere from the Ravkan Civil War. 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk Their romance was done in a great way, much agreed! So little meant so much. Everything was so subtle. She reeled me in like the easiest catch ever. I loved the constant torture & internalized comments where they'd actually reveal their true thoughts while remaining stoic on the outside. So much always left unsaid. 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk There aren't any moments I didn't love with those two interacting. Other than them constantly frustrating me with their dance around each other. I did really love how they could communicate well w/out talking and predict each others' wants, needs, and plans. 7y
Tracinator @bmsddk Like that scene in the bathroom when Kaz is redoing her bandages. I read it 3 times. Pure. Perfect. Torture. 7y
bmsddk Ah, that scene! What did you think of the Suli wisdom in this book (about fear)? 7y
