Written in the 1960s and set in a French small town, this is an astutely constructed novela. Tony Falcone, son of Italian migrants married with one daughter, and Andrée Despierres, wife of the local grocer, live an extramarital passion. All this takes a murderous turn for good or bad reasons: love, weakness, non-communication, lies and denial. Text jumps back and forth between present and flashbacks in a nicely knitted pattern.
