I love the artwork of this book, which is what my rating is for, however I cannot recommend it to be read to young children, especially if you know they have issues with drains or baths and both are fairly common issues. The child toy falls down into the drain and the whole family stand by helpless until he is rescued by accident by a plumber and even that isn't exactly a positive experience.

I really enjoyed this book, it was so hard for me stop reading and put it down when I needed to.
I love the universe created here, it felt believable and I really got a sense of the history and layers and small cultural details intriguing and added to a sense of realism. It did take me a while to adjust to the lack of gender pronouns, in the end I just gave up and started thinking of everyone as female. I am really looking forward to book two.

A fascinating look at a little remembered program from WWII to provide soldiers with books and how important those books were to the moral and emotional support of our troops. This program also helped create or modern market for mass paperback books and made reading more available to everyone. I especially liked the part where they showed the council fighting back against censorship. The writing style is easy and accessable and very educational.

This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Laura Resnick has a great gift for fun characters and dialog and she does a great job introducing different cultures and magic systems to modern New York City and making them feel real and like they fit. I really liked how she introduced Voodoo and zombies this time around. I am still invested in the romance between Esther and Det. Lopez, a fun, fun series.

Certain Dark Things: A Novel | Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I received this as an early review book

This was a very mixed book for me. The world and the science and history of the vampires in it were very well written and fascinating, the characters were believable and mostly engaging but I really didn't have fun reading it. This is due to the background plot, which is one I usually hate with a passion and had it been set in the real world I wouldn't have gone near it.
Well written but just not for me.
