Not heavy on the tech this sci fi. The plot doesn‘t try to involve you in mental gymnastics. Butler asks the essential questions . What does being human mean ? Where does the threshold reside of humanness? Butler tears apart our exceptionalism very simply. Theres no waffle no over lay no mystifying by high literary language. We are laid bare as we are . Hierarchical destructive zenophobic cruel yet complex beings.

CuriousG Love this series. I think the second one is my favourite, although the feel is quite different at times. Hope you love it too! 6mo
Onemoreodonian @CuriousG have to read the second one now. I wasn‘t even originally a sci fi reader though I‘ve read some Ursula le Guin before. This is very readable. I finished it in a couple of days 6mo
CuriousG I also read very little of this genre. Octavia Bulter and Mary Doria Russell (just her two novels that barely count as sci-fi) are really the only sci-fi authors I have enjoyed. 6mo

I think I liked the main character of this book the least out of the series, but I really liked the plot and ending. It's not exactly a satisfying ending to the series, but I enjoyed it overall. I'm glad to have finally read some Butler, and will probably attempt Parable of the Sower at some point in the future.

The second book in the Xenogenesis series, this is such a fascinating book about what it is to be human and what is necessary to survive.

I'll add the full warning in a spoiler comment, but CW for kidnapping and threatened violence towards young children.

sebrittainclark The main character is kidnapped by humans who hate the Oankali and their children at 1 year old and his family does not come rescue him for quite a while. 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I am reading Butler all this year but have been a bit put off after the 3rd book in the Pattermaster series. There is so much sexual violence. Can you tell me if this series (which is up next on my list) hugely focused on breeding? (Breeding most of the Pattermaster series is focused on the women having as many children as possible whether she wants to or not) 11mo
sebrittainclark @ChaoticMissAdventures There is a little off page sexual violence referenced (there's a good bit of on-page explicit violence, but not sexual). There is a focus on breeding in terms of integrating Oankali and humans via their hybrid children. It's certainly coercive, manipulative, and not fully consensual in some cases, but it's not explicitly violent. 11mo
sebrittainclark @ChaoticMissAdventures This series is my first time reading Butler, so I can't really compare to her other works if this is more or less violent or more or less focused on breeding than usual for her. 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @sebrittainclark Thanks! I have read Kindred and Fledgling and then 3 ofthe Patternmaters and she seems to have a fascination with breeding (often called this by her, not procreation, or something else more human) It does look like you are rating this high, her craftmanship of the stories is really fantastic. even if most of the books are very violent. 11mo

This was my first introduction to Octavia Butler, and what a weird but fascinating book. The first half was a little slow, but I read the second half in a single sitting. It's unlike anything else I've read, and I really enjoyed it.

ChaoticMissAdventures I am reading all of her books this year! I haven't read this one yet but your review sounds like many of her books! I am in the middle of the Pattermaster series and each book gets more fast paced. 13mo
sebrittainclark @ChaoticMissAdventures oh what a fun challenge! I want to try to read Parable of the Sower this year, as well as the rest of the Xenogensis series, since I've heard so much about it. 13mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @sebrittainclark she is such a legend, I am a bit embarrassed I haven't read her until this year! I want to get to Dawn this summer. So glad you liked it! 13mo

Not only is Butler an award winning author, her books are still read today and she is one of the few authors of color in the Sci-Fi genre. She was truly before her time.

Eggs Agree 💯 👏🏻👏🏻 13mo
