Robotswithpersonality
Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics | Dolly Parton, Robert K Oermann
post image
Mehso-so

A pleasant meander. Sort of an extended interview/conversation, using individual songs to talk either specifically about the story behind the song or some aspect of Dolly's life.
I'll admit to wishing the production had been a bit different: the beginnings of songs start the various conversations, and maybe it's a rights or length concern, but after a while you just find yourself wishing you could hear the whole song 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? instead of a fade out clip. Acknowledged, I could just pause and go listen to the song, but that does tend to break up the listening experience....
The other somewhat jarring feature were the interstitials not in Dolly's voice - introducing changes in subject matter that are not fronted by a different song. I can understand the organizing principle behind sectioning off and clearly labelling such shifts in topics but the voice doing so
2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 is almost robotic, not melodic, and is an unpleasant contrast to Parton's drawl and occasional drift into song.
And on the really, really subjective end of critiques, evidently this awesome person is a lot more religious/spiritual than I knew and God/gospel talk is just distancing to this atheist reader.

Why Sinatra Matters | Pete Hamill
post image
Pickpick

Republished in honour of what would have been Sinatra's 100th birthday in 2015, this is a personal tribute to 'Ol Blue Eyes' himself. Although it obviously centres around the man & his career, it also covers Italian immigration into America & Sinatra's first brush with prejudice, the rise & fall of Prohibition (& by extension the Mob), & the Second World War. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I'm not what you would call a Sinatra fan, he was more my mum's cup of tea, but I found this surprisingly interesting to read. It's fairly short at just under 200 pages but it's a good introduction if you have a longer biography about Sinatra to read (which I do).

The author was apparently a friend/acquaintance of the man before he died & his admiration & regard for Sinatra comes through his writing.

OutsmartYourShelf The focus is obviously on Sinatra's music, but I was surprised that his dealings with the Kennedys & the 'Rat Pack' were not covered here & I'm still not sure what the actual truth was when it comes to certain rumoured connections. A good read though. 4🌟

dabbe Oh, I know this pic well! It's from the 1980s Grammys when they both sang “You Don't Bring Me Flowers“, which also qualifies as a major #loveontherocks song! They brought the house down! If you haven't seen it, it's on youtube. I adore Babs & Neil! 🩶💚🩶 4mo
Eggs Oh yesss! Just thinking about them singing that song gives me goosebumps 4mo
marleed If I think of Grammy performances, you don‘t bring me roses is what immediately comes to mind. It was the water cooler talk of the day! 4mo

Randomly reading this biography from 2000 with one of my favourite bookmarks and then i realised … OH! Well played bookmark gods.

I‘m interested in this period in Hollywood and the studio machinations behind the scenes - and man, Judy Garland was treated so badly. Her mother had her on amphetamines at the age of 10 😱😱 So I really enjoyed this - but it does have its flaws. ⬇️

Centique Clarke muses on Judys motivations and psychology and i think assumes too much at times. Also some of the stereotyping of women at the time is accepted at face value. He decries the fact that Judy‘s self esteem was damaged because her looks were so scrutinised but at the same time he seems to represent certain other actresses as little more than sex symbols. Its still an excellent read if youre interested in Judy Garland. 5mo
EKonrad I‘ll read any books about her. Always interesting to see different biographers takes on her life. Such a fascinating woman! 5mo
Centique @EKonrad agreed! An amazing woman 😍 5mo

Centique @Suet624 i know right? I get they didnt know too much about the consequences but the poor kid was a work horse being pushed past her limits 💔 3mo
Suet624 Sarah Pauley writes about the abuses she suffered as a child actor too. So tough on the kids. 3mo
Centique @Suet624 yes! That was one of the best books i read last year. So much wisdom in her words 💕 3mo

I'm not really interested in Hollywood behind-the-scenes stuff but Judy Garland was in two of my favorite movies so I picked it up. It was disgusting how the movie industry treated people. I suppose it was us fans that drove it though. There's money to be made by exhibiting Judy Garland; mental health be damned. Judy grew up on stage, never had a normal life, and was never quite sane. I think she just wanted to go home but that balloon had sailed.
