Really not liking the main characters so far. Especially not liking Lucia. But the story is interesting,so I keep reading.

I picked up this book mainly for the setting. Una is a grifter and conwoman in NYC in the 1880s. When she gets into trouble, she takes a spot in the Bellevue training school for nurses to hide from the police. It was fascinating to see what it may have been like for these women when the field of nursing was in its infancy. The image I chose was featured in the book and is a very early blood transfusion. There was also a very obvious murder mystery
This book has a lot of (often repetitive & overlapping) history to fill in the time period when the cocktail was in fashion. A better read is A History of the World in 6 Glasses, which worked better to show the influence of six specific beverages on Western history and society.
The most helpful chapters are the last 2: A Thumbnail Guide to Rum & When It‘s Cocktail Time. Overall, disappointing. But at least it‘s off my shelf!
Book 4 for #20in4
This looks fun and I wanted to join in😊
1: this is a tossup between The Stranger in the Lifeboat by Mitch Albom and The Nurse‘s Secret by Amanda Skenandore
2: The Golden Dynasty by Kristen Ashley
3: Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
4: Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare
5: The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan
6: Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber (so good and helped me get out of my reading slump)
7: Mitch Albon

😳 That is shame on Teddy.
Despite this particular passage, so far this account is personable and laugh/snort out loud amusing!
While there‘s some interesting info here, the whole thing‘s a bit of a slog. It starts by talking about efforts to create a railroad connecting Alaska the Tierra del Fuego, heads into the rise of motor vehicles in the US, then continues into efforts to connect the Americas tip to tip with a highway. In need of editing and a much more engaging voice.
