My husband and I have been listening to this book on audio for what feels like forever but have really finished the bulk of it on our roadtrip. It‘s little like 2 books - the first two thirds a historical and sometimes philosophical ref election on the development of liberalism - this part I would give 5 out of 5 to. The latter third is a reflection on the threads to liberalism with a real focus on growing nationalism. This section is also ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader Very good but Dunt‘s politics and personal voice shine through - if you agree with him it‘s sharp and powerful if you don‘t it risks being dismissed and that‘s a shame because he lends some great insights. 6mo

Phew 😮‍💨 It‘s taken me many many weeks to get through this chunkster, at almost 900 pages it was very dense but so interesting and I felt like I learned a lot I didn‘t know about the British empire. The author made it easy to understand and broke it up nicely so the chapters weren‘t too long. A depressing read at times but I‘m glad I read about an important part of history which we don‘t get taught in school but should

Personal opinion: Buckley is upset that Yale didn‘t live up to his expectations. Not enough Christianity, too many agnostics and atheists on faculty; too much emphasis on collectivism and the general welfare, too little praise in individualism; too much emphasis on academic freedom, not enough on making faculty teach the values he believes in. He would have been much happier if he‘d transferred to Georgetown or a seminary, in my humble opinion.

I‘ll give this a pick but with caveats. This book covers the timely subject of how information is gained, vetted, and knowledge established in society. It has lots of important “food for thought,” however, I was disappointed by the author‘s discussion of the concept that words are not violence, they don‘t hurt you, other than perhaps your feelings (and people need to toughen up.) In my opinion, he fails to properly address ⬇️

ReadingRachael ….that it is words that insight violence, and it is words that lead people to discriminate. I wonder his viewpoint on this is, in part, due to the safety that comes from not being a “visible” minority and therefore not having experienced violence and discrimination from total strangers based on appearance alone? I wish this subject was better addressed as the book left me at times saying but…..but…..but…. 2y
