#JuneSpecials Day 7: My backdrop looks like a #Prairie of sorts - at the foot of Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain - sunflowers in the middle of the desert. My review of Maria Ressa‘s outstanding book here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-pdf

This book was amazing! You have to read it. Ressa is a Philippine American dual citizen, journalist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Her story is incredible. She describes her work to preserve the integrity of journalism and democracy in the Philippines, the global south, and the world. What she‘s been through under Duterte and his successor, her fight against Facebook/social media misinformation…it‘s all so relevant. Just take my word and read it.

Themes: Interwoven Short Stories, Quirky Charcters, Journalism

This was a quirky, quick read - just what the doctor ordered. I enjoyed some of the characters‘ stories more than others, there was one I skipped after 3 pages because I knew my blood pressure was rising from the stress the character was facing 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Overall though, a pick with an astrisk that it will not be everyone‘s cup of tea ☕️🧋🫖

MallenNC I read this years ago and all I remember is I hated it bc of what happened to one character‘s dog. It felt mean. 10mo
Aims42 @MallenNC I can understand that 😔💔 I was shocked at that part, like mouth dropped open shocked. 10mo
MallenNC @Aims42 It‘s the first thing I think of when I see the cover. 10mo

Journalist Kostyuchenko is also a lesbian, apparently giving her government multiple reasons to target her. Yet here she is unafraid to show what truly happens on the ground in Russia while showing a deep love for her country and its people. This is searing and tough to read but excellent.
