Pickpick

This is my #doublespin for July @TheAromaofBooks
I enjoyed this. It wasn't entirely true to the facts. But I like history and it was an easy and fast read. Was a bit disgusted with the way women were treated back then. Also how it was all about power. And then those two little boys living all alone in The tower. It makes me wonder if children were mature at a younger age than they're now.
TBR since 6/7/2023; 316 pages.

This was good. It was long, but Eleanor lived a long life. I have read one or two books about her, but it‘s been a while, and I don‘t recall the stories of Thomas a Becket and Richard the Lionheart, which Plaidy included in her book here. (Becket was a friend of Henry‘s and Richard was Eleanor and Henry‘s son.) Cont in comments...

LibraryCin They were likely there, but maybe I just didn‘t know who they were when I read about them originally, so the stories didn‘t “stick” in my memory. Plaidy is very detailed with her history, and that is to be commended, but it doesn‘t always make for the most interesting fiction. Even so, overall, I liked it. 9mo

mollie & I on the site of the disappeared Fotheringhay castle where Mary queen of Scot‘s was beheaded. memorial by the river nene at the base of the mount & the beautiful church with its unusual architecture was built by her son James1 her remains are no longer there & the castle was destroyed by him. The masonry & staircase which she walked down to her death is in the talbot hotel in oundle where we married,I walked down it in my wedding dress

TrishB Richard 111 was born there too. 14mo

Bookbuyingaddict @TrishB I didn‘t know that until I saw the plaque . Have you watched the film the lost king about the lady who received an mbe for locating and preserving with bigots to unearth him in the carpark , it‘s excellent 👌 worth a watch . I never did think he called the princess , Tudor propaganda! X. 14mo
TrishB Yes I‘ve watched. I contributed to Phillipa‘s research funds before it was all picked up by Leicester Uni! A fantastic achievement for her. I‘m a big R3 fanatic. (edited) 14mo

Day 14 of @Andrew65 's #Top20series #20series20days challenge

The top picture is how I read the series as it comes in one volume but have shown underneath what both of them are called individually.

Andrew65 Remind me of my mum. She loved Jean Plaidy and I was brought up on her. Loved her Georgian Series and her Victoria series. Still got a lot of her books from when my mum died. Possibly need to read this series. 4y

I think this is the beginning of the Plantagenets-of course I need to do some double checking, of course it‘s the same with these kings and their “favorites” and I guess always has been ; I put this down for a while because it is a bit slow but I want to take a break from mad Henry VIII before I continue with that series

Scochrane26 Have you read The Summer Queen, the Winter Crown, & the Autumn Throne? I still haven‘t read the 3rd, but it‘s a good trilogy about Eleanor. 4y
Lauraandherbooks @Scochrane26 no I didn‘t know there was a trilogy!! But thank you - now I will have to find them - her story is interesting but this book doesn‘t deliver on what it could be ... it‘s a bit dry 4y
Scochrane26 @Lauraandherbooks I keep forgetting to read the 3rd one, it wasn‘t out when I read the others. I really like them—same time as Phillipa Gregory books. 4y
Lauraandherbooks @Scochrane26 i really enjoy this genre so I‘m happy to find another trilogy 😃 4y

What is she doing with my book??? I‘m supposed to fall asleep reading 🤣🥰

Crazeedi I tried to read a different book by this author but found it not very good. And I love reading this tome period 4y
Lauraandherbooks @Crazeedi this is the first book by this author I have read and the time period is my interest but unfortunately I am trudging thru this book slowly, I find it very easy to put it down even after 1 page so this is unfortunate- I‘m determined to get through it but it‘s going to take awhile 4y

Terrible photo...but I am enjoying this book by Jean Plaidy. Katharine had a spectacular, but also very sad, life. I started collecting Plaidy books about 10 years ago after reading her Norman trilogy. Finally decided I need to actually read them all and free up shelf space! Started with the Tudor Saga. Jean Plaidy was a pen name of author Eleanor Hibbert (who also wrote as Philippa Carr, Victoria Holt and several other pseudonyms).

Scochrane26 I used to read some Victoria holt when I was a teen but didn‘t know it was a pen name. 4y
Sace The Ferdinand and Isabella trilogy is also very good. I think I've tagged the first book. 4y
