Embarrassed to say this is my first Frazier since Cold Mountain. But really, how can you ever follow up such a phenomenal debut without some disappointment? This is no Cold Mountain, but I still found it mostly entertaining. If you‘re a fan of Raymond Chandler, the American West, or 1930s noir, you‘ll enjoy this little romp. There are shades of Gatsby, a Lady Eve, just don‘t take this mashup too seriously.

Today I read this lovely Christmas book to the little humans. I never read a Polacco book I didn‘t like.

dabbe I once read PINK AND SAY to a group of reluctant readers in 7th grade and ended up sobbing at the end. Most of them were boys, and one said, “You're weird, Mrs. Abbe.“ 🤣 #loveherbookstoo 4mo

Set in the years of the Great Depression, the narrator Val,a young artist, gets his first job painting a mural in a post office in a Wyoming mountain town.He stays with the rich and charismatic couple John and Eve who commissioned the mural.Soon Val has a crush on Eve who is in her mid twenties-a free spirit,at times depicted like a femme fatale from a 1940s movie. Then Eve is gone and Val sent off to find her.Very slow pace, beautifully written.

Not a book I would normally pick to read . It was a gift. I did enjoy it. A slight mystery running through it. Set in the Depression in the US. Interesting comments on the political system. A young artist goes to a small town to paint a mural on the PO wall. Has to depict hope and promise about the town.

Tamra Love the cover art - such rich colors! 7mo

Oh man. I really wanted it like this because the premise sounded so interesting, and that cover, WOW! But, 50 (extremely slow) pages in, I just can‘t keep going anymore. The author doesn‘t use quotation marks at all and he refers to John Long as ‘Long‘ so it‘s extremely confusing when you come across this: Long said. Nope, this one wasn‘t for me.

Bookwormjillk No quotation marks- why??!!! 11mo
Aims42 @Bookwormjillk I wish I knew 😩😭 I realllllly tried to power through figuring I‘d get used to it, but I couldn‘t. I couldn‘t get a rhythm going. Maybe if there‘s an audiobook it would be easier? 11mo
Karisimo I started listening on audio. The quotations weren't a problem, but the story was still so slow, decided to move on to other things.... 9mo
Aims42 @Karisimo That is good to know, thank you! I hope your next read is exceptionally good to make up for this one 😁 9mo

The Road | Jack London

My first London story and yes he can write; really damned well. Semi autobiographical tales from his youth when he road the rails as a Hobo, challenging the Shacks, wandering day to day across America and Canada. If you want to understand what the life of a rambler was like at the turn of the twentieth century this is a good starting point.

A English journalist who has lived in America most of his life and examines the role of the nomad in American tradition from Native Americans to mountain men to hobos to the modern one percenters who cannot fit into society. And he knows his subject having lived the life for years, travelling months at a time on the road in pursuit of both stories but also a great understanding of why some people must always wander. Dated but fascinating.

Excellent collection of true accounts of young hobos during the Depression of the 30's catching trains and hoping to get work. Some were out for adventure but most were desperate.

I am starting this Great Depression hobo account, which I have owned for a couple of years since getting it at a thift store (Deseret Industries in Utah, great places to find old books). I'm interested in this era in U.S. History.

bibliothecarivs Do you have a favourite DI location for books? I have made great discoveries at Logan and Murray. #litsyutah 2y
KCofKaysville @bibliothecarivs Murray is a favorite but I like Layton too! 2y
bibliothecarivs @KCofKaysville I'll have to check it out sometime. Thanks! 2y
