Things Fall Apart | Chinua Achebe
post image
Panpan

Two overlapping, intertwining stories, both of which center around Okonkwo, a “strong man” of an Ibo village in Nigeria.

The first of these stories traces Okonkwo's fall from grace with the tribal world in which he lived, and the second story tells of the destruction of his world through the arrival of aggressive European missionaries.

I absolutely did not like this book, was required, very confusing, poorly told.

Mcoun I agree - it came highly recommended and it just didn't do anything for me. 8y
ScrappyMags I teach this book to sophomores. They aren't into it. I didn't like it the 1st time but liked it more with more in depth analysis in college. For instance how Achebe is one of the few who shows the African perspective. Ppl assumed they didn't have rules, govt, etc and while its primitive they actually did have a complex way of living. Anyway I understand not liking it. Its more "school book" to me and forever will be 8y
Melkyl I really liked this when I had to read it for a class in college. I enjoyed the discussions we had in class about the reading. Maybe sharing with classmates made it better for me. 8y

Peaceful_Reader Read this in college also. Great discussions.... 8y
Spiderfelt I attempted to read it last summer, but couldn't get through it. There are lots of great Nigerian writers, so I decided to apply the same yardstick to this book as I would to any other. Because tastes differ, what might be highly recommended by some may not appeal to me. I love Nnedi Okorafor and 8y
HiddenGemBooks @ScrappyMags true... It was too complex for me to understand, I read it like 6 years ago, I was forced to read like 40 pages a night, then we never even discussed it in class. Maybe given the chance now with a book club or something would make a difference. 8y
HiddenGemBooks @Melwilk never had discussions with my classmates, teacher never explained anything, I just had a terrible experience all around 😕 perhaps if we discussed ever day the 40-50 pages we were forced to read the previous night, I would feel differently. 8y
HiddenGemBooks @Peaceful_Reader I wish our reading accompanied discussions, but my teacher never explained anything 😕 8y
SusanInTiburon Oh, such a shame! Maybe because it was required and scheduled? I read it of my own volition and was really moved by it. Made me interested in African fiction for the first time. But the beautiful thing is we don't have to agree on anything to be curious about everything. 8y
HiddenGemBooks @Spiderfelt I love chimamanda adichie! So many good Nigerian writers, I agree, which only further led to my disappointment of "Things Fall Apart". 8y
HiddenGemBooks @SusanInTiburon a classic disappointment I have with required readings. If the circumstances around my reading would've been different I might've felt more open, but with the teacher forcing us to read so many pages every night without discussions the following day? I just couldn't keep up and got frustrated. The first chapter though was AMAZING, I will admit that it hooked me in with that kind of an opener😍 8y
SusanInTiburon @cookiejanester I hear you. Forced reading rarely satisfies. 8y
Erinelizabethkayata So agree. I had to read this freshman year of high school and was so put off that I don't even know if I'd attempt it again. I don't even remember what I disliked, I just remember dragging myself through it. 8y
ScrappyMags @cookiejanester I will take it as a compliment then when my students tell me they don't like the book but I made it interesting! Never easy to🤗🤗🤗 8y
Peaceful_Reader @cookiejanester : that is a shame. Why assign if you are not going to discuss?? #crazyteachers 🙄 8y
HiddenGemBooks @ScrappyMags the true sign of an excellent teacher in my opinion! 😊👏 8y
HiddenGemBooks @Peaceful_Reader I have no idea! Most of my teachers assigned it cause it was required by the district and never made it fun. Just forced us through it quickly then write an essay on it. Ridiculous. 8y
Zebrasrus I actually loved this story! I thought it was very creative and telling, especially for its time. I did a group project on it last semester (end of year two of college), and found that people either understood and liked the book, or found it difficult to follow and didn't like it. I think if you had more chance to discuss the novel, you would like it more as it would maybe be easier to understand. 8y
