pickTense times in the story. Romantics will love the ending. Bennie quickly accepts Jason‘s murder case because she wasn‘t able to help him when he was younger and wrongfully imprisoned. Still, she doesn‘t believe his story. On top of it, this case will put her in the presence of her lost love (who imho is a jerk!). She pursues Jason‘s innocence to the point of risking contempt of court.
so-soI can see why this book is popular & garnered rave reviews. It‘s a great courtroom drama, an incisive examination of the immigrant experience, culture, & the weight of family expectations/hopes, as well as a compelling look at the moral gray areas people find themselves in as they protect themselves & their families at the expense of others. I had real issues, however, with how the author wrote about autism & that kept pulling me out of the story.
My IRL book club read this while I was out of the country. Time to catch up!
