Anatomy of a Murder | Robert Traver
post image

💙 I'm a small town gal. Grew up in a small college town in Illinois, then left to go to college in a different small college town in Michigan, and have been a Michigander ever since.
💙Anatomy of a Murder is set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where I reside, and the film was shot in the UP, too. (Highly recommend both)
💙Adding a bonus book: The Overstory by Richard Powers. He was born and raised in my hometown in Illinois.

The basket holds decades of memories, including her mother‘s wishes for her happiness and her own shattered hopes for her first child. Filled with regret for never having used it, Mina embarks on a journey to re-create the picnic they never had. Along the way, she uncovers an unexpected and loving gesture her husband made years ago.

Tense times in the story. Romantics will love the ending. Bennie quickly accepts Jason‘s murder case because she wasn‘t able to help him when he was younger and wrongfully imprisoned. Still, she doesn‘t believe his story. On top of it, this case will put her in the presence of her lost love (who imho is a jerk!). She pursues Jason‘s innocence to the point of risking contempt of court.

I can see why this book is popular & garnered rave reviews. It‘s a great courtroom drama, an incisive examination of the immigrant experience, culture, & the weight of family expectations/hopes, as well as a compelling look at the moral gray areas people find themselves in as they protect themselves & their families at the expense of others. I had real issues, however, with how the author wrote about autism & that kept pulling me out of the story.

My IRL book club read this while I was out of the country. Time to catch up!
