Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker's Nightbreed | Clive Barker, Del Howison, Joseph Nassise

Having trouble sleeping again so I pulled out this one for a few short stories.

This is from Clive Barker‘s intro to the collection:

“Our lives are scattered throughout with periods of unbelonging; in childhood, of course, and adolescence; but in adulthood too, when sudden loss (or gain) forces us to reassess things we believe immutable.”

kalinichta Oh my god, I didn't know this was a thing! I think I may need this. 6y
SkeletonKey @kalinichta - WORTH IT. I‘m still reading but am loving it. 6y
kalinichta @SkeletonKey Yay! Okay, I'm excited now. 6y

Aaaaand I finished the first volume so quickly that I‘m already on to the second one. I‘ll do a review once I finish the third(final?) volume.

I‘m having trouble drawing tonight and am a little too tired to read the books I‘m on now so I‘m going to bed early with a good ol‘ graphic novel. I‘ve been wanting to read these for a while and I really hope they‘re good.

I finally dismantled my Tower of Books and found the one on the bottom that I wanted to read. Sorting and purging did feel pretty good.

Gotta read this one soon now!!

Pickpick

Recent internet score. Nightbreed is one of my favorite films and Cabal is an awesome novel so I‘ve been collecting for a while. Didn‘t have this yet!

It has full page character portraits with descriptions and backstories on all the different Breed you see but never quite get to know. Sooooo good. I‘m a sucker for well thought out and complex backstories.

Mehso-so

Cabal This was my first Clive barker book that i read . I read this with @trioxin_sematary 😘 I enjoyed this book , Barker World's are so different and so creative ! I love his imagination. I wouldn't say this is his strongest book but It was a perfect beginner book for a new Clive Barker reader!

Hellbound heart was so far my favorite out of the 2 !! I would rate this a 6/10

KathyWheeler My favorite Barker has always been The Damnation Game. 6y
KathyWheeler I liked the movie Cabal was made into — Nightbreed — even if it was a little cheesy and the special effects could‘ve been better. 6y
Reggie @KathyWheeler Weaveworld is my favorite of his followed by The Great and Secret Show/Everville series. I read the Damnation Game in college and remember thinking it was really dark. 6y

MStew @Reggie all of those are on my tbr!!! Damnation game I've heard is really good and very dark! Weaveworld also looks amazing!! 6y
MStew @KathyWheeler I need to watch nightbreed!! 6y
KathyWheeler @Reggie I have started The Great and Secret Show probably 15 times. Each time, I put it down and don‘t pick it up again for years. I don‘t understand this as I enjoy it while I‘m reading it. This may be the year I finish it so I can read the rest of the series. 6y
MStew @KathyWheeler 😂😂😂😂😂 this is funny I hope this is year you conquer reading it!!! 6y
KathyWheeler @meghan2714 Me too! 😄 If It were an awful book and I was hating it, it would be one thing, but this, with a good book, is just ridiculous! Same thing happened to me with In Cold Blood — it took me 20 years to finally read that book. 6y
TheNeverendingTBR I'd rate it similarly, I think it lacked detail; I also think it might be a bad choice for someone's first Barker read as it might throw them off. It's not a terrible book, I'm not saying that at all; I'm sure he fulfilled all the criteria he set out to fulfill when he finished it, it just didn't do much for me @meghan2714 6y
TheNeverendingTBR @KathyWheeler The Damnation Game is brilliant! ☺ 6y
TheNeverendingTBR Coldheart Canyon and Books of Blood are also absolutely brilliant! 6y
MStew @trioxin_sematary if someone isn't sure about jumping into his darker materials.. This is a good place to start it was not as dark as his other reads and it had a paranormal fantasy vibe . 6y
madamereadsalot1 I think the best book to ease someone into Barker is The Thief of Always. It's considered YA, so it's safe from some of his more graphic content, but it's absolutely wonderful fantasy that by no means feels like a YA novel. It gives you an idea of how wonderful his writing is. My favorites are Cold Heart Canyon, The Great and Secret Show, and Abarat. 6y
MStew @madamereadsalot1 Yesss!! That one would be a great book to start with !!! I agree 6y
Scurvygirl The Books of Blood are really good short stories. I agree with @Reggie Weaveworld is amazing. Clive Barker is an acquired taste. He's not like Stephen King at all but he builds enormous worlds and characters and his horror is infinite. 6y
