It was a true tale of the human spirit and the ability to grow and develop, even in the most adverse conditions. I felt like I related to this book on a very personal level, and would not recommend it for somebody who doesn't appreciated subtlety or who has never experienced a traumatic event such as loss or poverty. Very well written!! #comingofage #atreegrowsinbrooklyn #bettysmith #turnofthecentury #summerreading #bettysmith #americanclassic

4.5/5 ⭐️'s
A coming of age story, set in the early 1900's. It is a poignant tale filled w/ joy & heartache. The story follows, Francie Nolan, a young, idealistic girl, growing up in the Brooklyn slums. As we follow her through her formative years, we see the small aspects of her daily life, as well as the bigger issues of war, class, religious intolerance, poverty & illness. #atreegrowsinbrooklyn #bettysmith #modernclassics #amreading #bookreview

catebutler @MyBookBath Jude, you'd love this one! I also have her novel, Joy in the Morning on my list. I understand it is sublime. 7y

Currently reading, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I find there are so many passages I highlight and contemplate. This one struck me especially, while I was doing a bit of early morning reading, today. #atreegrowsinbrooklyn #treegrowsinbrooklyn #bettysmith #quotes #currentlyreading #quote

Francie Nolan is my favorite literary character of all time. I first read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn when I was 12 and it has remained my favorite book since then. I can't even guess how many times I have read it. No author I have ever read can capture the raw beauty, heartbreak, pain, love and sorrow that is life the way Betty Smith has
