I‘ve liked a lot of Lepore‘s work but I struggled with this one. I think the issue is that, as she herself mentions, the historical record on Jane Franklin, Ben‘s sister, is just rather thin. It just ended up not holding my interest.

I love Ben, but here the biographer‘s hand was too often seen and sometimes heavy. Very often he said things like “When Ben was young he did this and that showed why he did these other things later.” It‘s not as if I didn‘t get anything from this, but it was not enjoyable and too long.
(1/2) In school I never cared much about American history. Who cared about a bunch of old dudes who talked funny & wore stupid wigs? Coming into Franklin‘s autobiography I was expecting tough and unrelatable. In fact, I got engaging, &, in a word, stunning. I was struck by how progressive of a thinker Franklin was. He questioned God & religion in a time when it was very unpopular to do so. He felt women deserved more rights & he detested slavery.
Everybody needs a fun little biography of Benjamin Franklin in their life! Let this one be yours! Even with his flaws, Franklin is one our country‘s best patriots. I wish more present day Americans had half his good sense and a quarter of his excellent humor! 🪁 ⚡️
This was an interesting read. Benjamin Franklin (yes, that one) spends his free time in London solving crimes. I enjoyed this enough to read more of the series.
