Mehso-so

The premise of this is fantastic: Queen Victoria takes Vlad Tepes as her Prince Consort, making vampirism fashionable—while Jack the Ripper stalks vampire women by night. But the book itself was disappointing. Newman got caught up in name-dropping literary & historical characters almost as a substitute for good world-building. The narrative was a bit of a slog, and though things pick up toward the end, it was too little too late for me.

Closing out my November 5th with tea in this seasonally-appropriate mug (remember, remember…) and this book I didn‘t manage to read in October!

Book mail from last week. I‘ve read 3.

Anno Dracula by Kim Newman, signed 30th anniversary edition, red sprayed edges.

The Order by Jeremy Robinson has a hard cover that matches the dust jacket.

Atlas Six & Atlas Paradox are signed by the author. Paradox is bound upside down. Pretty sprayed edges. Illumicrate editions.

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. Jacketless hardcover edition with the paperback cover printed on the hardcover.

This spooky season I‘m throwing it all the way back to the vampire origin stories. I‘m wanting to read classic vampire stories that shaped the way we imagine vampires. And I‘m thoroughly enjoying my journey.

If you want to start this project with me then head over to Wildwood Reads for classic vampire stories print out to go in your reading journal. https://wildwoodreads.com/2022/10/05/classic-vampire-stories-printable/

Bookwomble I just read Carmilla in the anthology I'm reading at the moment. Great story 🧛🏻‍♀️ 2y
wildwoodreads @Bookwomble It is. And I‘m going to have to check that anthology out! 2y

Let‘s get steamy! 😏

1. Yup! Love them! And I love how the genre is spreading beyond Victorian England, like Master of Djinn! ❤️⚙️❤️
2. One thing I really love is the aesthetics. All the brass and leather and glass.
3. Tagged! Been in my kindle library for a while! 😅

#SundayFunday Have a wonderful day and don‘t forget to tag me so I can see your posts!

Pickpick

I personally love these books. Kim Newman is one of my favorite newer authors and his use of characters in history and pop culture is just fantastic.

Bailedbailed

This makes me so sad because I LOVE Newman! This book was a disaster! Choppy, disjointed, and most of the fun characters, from the first 3 novels, were no longer there. A new villain was introduced, and while he was cool, it took WAY too long to get to him. 😭 Most of my Halloween books have been flops.

Not even ⭐️ but I will continue with the series.

ReadingOver50 That‘s disappointing. The cover looks great! 3y
StellaDz Honestly the whole series has amazing covers and that‘s what grabbed me with the first one! I‘m sticking with him despite this flop. The others have been ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3y
