Mechanica | Betsy Cornwell

Pickpick

4/5⭐ This book is truly MAGICAL. Gorgeous writing I wanted to dive into. I adored the creative steampunk aspects. it's everything I want in a fairytale retelling. The story isn't terribly complex (some plot thread wrap-ups seemed thin), but the developing agency of the main character is done very well. I appreciated the exploration of friendship, love, & being true to your own dreams. #projectnew #TIABchallenge

wanderinglynn I know I shouldn‘t judge just on the cover, but I would pick this book up for the cover alone. Beautiful! 5y
hissingpotatoes @wanderinglynn Right??? I'm so glad the writing matched the cover for me. 5y

Adaptation | Malinda Lo

4/5⭐ Whew, this book was action packed from page one! I couldn't put it down and finished across just two evenings. There were definitely plot moments that felt weak to me, but overall I really enjoyed the complex characters, their diverse relationships, and the consistent tension. It was especially nice to see a positively portrayed mother character in a YA sci-fi. #projectSAMS #TIABchallenge

Slajaunie Sounds interesting. Love sci-fi and teen! Glad there is a positive Mom role model as well. 5y
hissingpotatoes @Slajaunie For more teen sci-fi, I definitely recommend Origin by Jessica Khoury. The fast pacing is similar to Adaptation. 5y
Slajaunie Sounds interesting. I will add it to my tbr. 5y

Provenance | Ann Leckie

4/5⭐ Leckie's strength is creating such complex, believable worlds that they feel alien. I never felt like I knew what was going on completely, but that off-kilter feeling was never strong enough to limit my enjoyment of the book. It's a serious balancing accomplishment. I enjoyed the adventure. Most of all, I adored the relationships between Ingray, Garal, Tic, & Taucris. I'd love to see more of their shenanigans. #projectSAMS #TIABchallenge

Saga Vol. 9 | Brian K. Vaughan

Pickpick

4/5⭐ Not surprised by events based on other readers' reactions. Given this series has broken me already, I was ok w/ emotional spoilers this time.

Getting tired of The Will, who's flatlined to more of a tool than a fully realized character.

Overall great storytelling. Eager to see the consequences of what went down once the creators come back from hiatus.

readordierachel Yeah, it'll be interesting to see where they go from here. 5y

Saga Vol. 9 | Brian K. Vaughan

Why, because you think made-up stories have never resulted in actual casualties? Putting new ideas into another person's head is an aggressive act, and aggressive acts have consequences. Face it, you can be a writer or a pacifist, but you can't be both. #projectSAMS #TIABchallenge

readordierachel That whole scene was great 5y

4/5⭐ Ooh, well I am intrigued. The pacing is perfect, including how new ideas/characters/traits are unveiled. The characters are compelling, the action engaging, the universe complex. Can't wait to continue with the next volume. #projectnew #TIABchallenge

Mehso-so

3/5⭐ The social commentary aspects were very well done, especially against the backdrop of the Frankenstein themes. At times it seemed a little rushed and to gloss over things--I expected more nuance for the original monster, but that never materialized. I loved Josephine and her brilliance. #projectnew #TIABchallenge

Dinosaur Planet Survivors | Anne McCaffrey

Bailedbailed

.5/5⭐ This review is mostly the same as for the first book since the same issues apply.

This book was completely unnecessary. The events were already covered, I suspect sometimes word for word, in the Planet Pirates series. There was almost no action in this book, no trajectory, no spice or flavor, no character growth whatsoever. Boring, flat, clinical, disappointing. #projectSAMS #TIABchallenge

.5/5⭐ This book was completely unnecessary. The events were already covered, I suspect sometimes word for word, in the Planet Pirates series. There was almost no action in this book, no trajectory, no spice or flavor, no character growth whatsoever. It takes a special case to mess up literal dinosaurs in space. Boring, flat, clinical, disappointing. #projectSAMS #TIABchallenge
