so-soThis one‘s hard to review because some of the short stories I really enjoyed, and some had me very bored. In general, I like sci-fi that reads more like fantasy, and am less drawn to “hard sci-fi” that gets in the weeds with theoretical and technological descriptions of the science. Many of the stories in this collection felt like they were written by different people because of how much the styles varied.
pickI love the humor of Fredrick Blackman! This short story had me laughing out loud. The seriousness of the situation was evident and the solution so simple, yet the committee made everything difficult. If you‘re looking for a few reasons to laugh, give this a read. 4/5⭐️
pickHallowed Ground is a novella by Linda Castillo in the Kate Burkholder Series. I think this would make a perfect read for October, around Halloween. Kate Burkholder is called to an Amish farm where a dog has come up with a human bone. Her and Tomasetti are soon staking out an old cemetery.

pickI adore Backman‘s writing and this had me laughing out loud! Lucas, an introvert, is dragged into interacting with his neighbors and a very meddling apartment board (Head 3, aka Linda, was particularly funny) when a frying pan is not properly disposed of. Things quickly spiral out of control and it‘s up to Lucas to get things in the building back to normal.

pick4 Stars • The Answer Is No by Fredrik Backman is a quick, funny read that‘s pure Backman—witty, warm, and a bit absurd. Lucas, a grumpy introvert, just wants to game and eat pad thai in peace, but a rogue frying pan in his building‘s recycling room sparks a hilarious mess of nosy neighbors, petty apartment board drama, and even a cult calling him an angel. ⬇️
pickClaire Keegan delivers here quite a sad, but not uncommon tale of an unhappy marriage.
Quite atmospheric, it's a well-written short story.
