A bit different than what I've come to expect from Ms. Brown. Her early books are standard romance, and later books are awesome mystery/suspense. This was like a family saga, with the way the narrative sometimes bounced around through the years, although it wasn't really about one family throughout the years, but rather multiple people. Confused? Yeah, I'm actually confusing myself a little here. Whatever it is, I very much enjoyed it.
Hammond cross, D.A in South Carolina town, finds himself at the epicenter of mobster Luis pettijohns murder. What does dr Alex Ladd have to do with the murder? As she is prime suspect, and the prime heart throb of Hammond, finding out who really shot the criminal will be pivotal in maintaining integrity and innocence.

Aside from constantly being distracted by the male cover model‘s Howard Wolowitzish haircut I enjoyed this older Sandra Brown. Hawk was a precursor to the wonderful heroes Ms. Brown would later write in her romantic mystery/suspense books, though at times he was almost too mean to the heroine. The heroine is spunky and likable, with a son who was cute without being precocious. The resolution at the end was a little rushed, but very satisfying.

I like this guy, I‘ma have sex with him but not tell him I‘m a virgin! Oh I‘m so ashamed, I‘ma sneak out while he‘s asleep! Oh this neglected plantation house is gorgeous, I‘ma fix it up good for the elderly owner! Oh, his son is my one night stand that I haven‘t stopped thinking about for two years! Oh, he wants to know why I ran out! It was your own fault Zack, for taking my virtue! I hate you! I love you!
