Recently re-watched the 90s teen soap opera Fifteen. Later I found this book on Amazon. I read some of it today while waiting to pick up groceries. I regret nothing.

Did I absolutely adore this book my husband picked for us to listen to on long drives? Yes! Do you have to be an Avatar fan to enjoy it? No, but it's even better if you are. This book was such a fun telling of Kyoshi's beginning and what the world of Avatar looked like 300ish years before the show. It's a super fun ride. The characters are delighfup, the action is suspenseful, and the punches are not pulled. #Avatar #TransmediaStories #LGBTQ

Kenyazero As a bonus, I found out that this author lives in Colorado! 2y

My first #NewYearWhoDis read was a fun adventure story. It took me a while to get into it because it‘s a prequel to something I‘m not familiar with, so it‘s developing characters I was already supposed to know. Once I got accustomed to the world I definitely enjoyed this though. Thank you, @jen_the_scribe and @monalyisha !

jen_the_scribe What did you think of Kyoshi? 2y
IndoorDame @jen_the_scribe I thought the world building was great and I really ended up able to envision the world it was set in. I thought the character building was less strong. There were a ton of characters, and some of them ended up with more fully developed arcs than others, and it didn‘t always make sense to me which. I definitely enjoyed the story and am glad I read it, but I haven‘t decided if I‘m going to continue the series or not. 2y
jen_the_scribe @IndoorDame I can definitely see why you feel that way. I listened to the next book in the series and I felt exactly how you felt about the first, it was even more slow going. So based on how you felt about the first, you might not enjoy the second one, I think. 2y
IndoorDame @jen_the_scribe good to know. Thanks! 2y

This was an awesome listen. It‘s definitely a tad bit more adult than the original ATLA and The Legend of Korra. Learning about Kyoshi‘s backstory was interesting, and she‘s every bit as amazing as I thought she was. I really liked learning who her “masters” were, definitely not what I expected but in the best way. A lot of action, drama, sadness, and tender moments.

A fun book about the girl who becomes the almost myth like Avatar Kyoshi from AtLA and her very humble, but kind of heartbreaking, beginning. Quite the adventure.

4.5/5 I loved it as an ATLA fan, but it's way darker and less comedic. Personally I appreciated it. Strong female characters with growth. As a prequel, the author did an excellent job creating a feeling of trepidation and hopelessness (too much occasionally). The story's moral commentary is left open without a strong answer on purpose. Braver than the shows. Manage expectations for the finale. Sequel added to my to read pile.
