Loved this cold, gothic historical fiction novel set in Newfoundland. The novel tracres the war between siblings in a small coastal village. Great on audio. 4 🌟

I picked up this book from the library having never heard of it, and I quite enjoyed it. Spend the summer in a small fishing village with a group of boys while they try to solve a mystery while growing up before us. A great look into the cod fishing industry on the east coast of Canada and the struggles it and the families that worked it suffered. A quick read and a good coming of age story.

While our eldest took his drama class I popped into the library and checked out this book. Our library had a flood so the entire fiction floor has been closed for a while. There are only a few shelves to browse on the upper floor (or you reserve ahead of time from their entire collection). I know nothing about it so hopefully I like it. Popcorn and a book for me tonight!

Loved!! He writes such complex characters. Often historical fiction doesn‘t give the characters such interiority - but people are people! Ultimately sad, but unpredictable and moving

This is a dark & somewhat depressing story about brother & sister rivals in a small outpost in Newfoundland in the late 18th century. The book deals with poverty, violence, religion, and the abuse of power and the writing, while beautiful, is sometimes hard to understand. In spite of that (or maybe because of it) it is a wonderful, deep and thought provoking story. In a fight between those with power, it is the little people that get hurt. 4/5

I think this might be a cause of It's-Me-Not-The-Book, because I loved the first book I read by Crummey. But I think I might have to stick to the German translation to fully enjoy his calm writings. Here I didn't get into the atmosphere, nor the story, starting to skim through and still didn't really care. So I'd rather try another time with a translated version than forcing myself to read the English version and not enjoying it.

What a beautiful book. Felt I was n Newfoundland with Pierce and his friends and family. Perfect read.

The son of a sealing captain in Newfoundland, Landish is more interested in the written word and wordplay, finding a friendship at Princeton with an extremely wealthy American. The book focuses on Landish‘s arc, as he moves forward while being mistreated by almost everyone around him. A melancholy story, but certainly well written.

Serendipitous read — picked up this title for my mother to read, (I supply her with library books along with groceries and other errands now that she has given up driving). I didn‘t bring any book with me when I came to help her; she‘s recuperating and sleeping, I picked up this title to read while I‘m staying with her. I‘ve read another John Gimlette title, “Elephant Complex” about Sri Lanka, it was excellent. Looking forward to this read.
