A sci-fi middle grade novel that‘s definitely written for its intended audience (eg, the MC‘s dad is a proctologist & that goes exactly how you‘d expect). Still, I love the storyline of using music & love to save the world. And the lessons van Eekhout incorporates are nuanced & worthy. I cheered when Agnes tells Jake that “just because something is illegal doesn‘t mean it‘s wrong,” using the example, “It used to be illegal for women to vote.” 👇🏻
monalyisha 1/1: One of the major messages, & a powerful one for tweens hitting puberty, is that change is okay & you can be a lot of things all at once. The imblobsters‘ attempt at natural discourse is funny, too; it reminds me of playing Taboo, when you try to explain a concept without the obvious word choices. This isn‘t the type of juv lit that adults will enjoy just as much as kids, & it‘s not SUPER original, but it‘s got its charms. #MallSeal 🦭 5d
