Playboy printed Malcolm X verbatim
Only people at the time to do so
Hughs love of the first amendment right did many good things
This is one of those two things can be true at the same time things

GingerAntics There are actually classroom resources for this? So someone is teaching this, or trying. I want to meet this person, shake there hand, then help them make this taught everywhere. 4y

My thoughts exactly
(Forgot to post) #XSUMMER2020 #MalcolmMondays
I‘ve given copies of this book to a few “kids” in their 20s who are devouring it but who are also very upset they never got taught or even told it was an option to read or learn about Malcolm X or even see a book about him in the library . As POC they feel seen reading it. I don‘t have an answer for them it‘s so incredibly frustrating the lack of diversity in required reading

Butterfinger Are you doing a read along? I have the book and thought someone mentioned it. I think it was @Riveted_Reader_Melissa maybe?? 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Butterfinger yes, we mentioned doing it later this year. There is a new audiobook coming out in September....narrated my Laurence Fishburne. It sounded like a great time to read it and listen, for both those revisiting it or reading/listening for the first time. 4y
TheBookHippie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Butterfinger We decided beginning of May to read or reread this for this summer -why it‘s called #XSummer2020 after I posted a quote about the book and Malcolm. Feel free to read with us if you want I post every Monday #MalcolmMondays you can go back and follow the hashtag or read with Melissa or both. I can‘t wait for the audio !! This is my fourth or fifth time reading through (edited) 4y

GingerAntics I may join you in September. I‘m appalled at the totally BS that was used to just bypass Malcolm X. Clearly he was an eloquent, intelligent man who wanted a better world for everyone. “We don‘t teach about violence movements in catholic education” is such a cop out. The teacher probably knew nothing about Malcolm herself. 🙄Ugh. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics we started June 1 a chapter or so a week. I think Melissa is starting in the fall. So worth it. Also not taught in parochial school 🙄 or public schools here 🤯 4y
GingerAntics Oh, it‘s definitely not taught in public schools. I think on a national level they decided MLK is enough. As long as he gets mentioned (sometimes just in passing), they‘ve got enough info on the civil rights movement. 🤬🤦🏼‍♀️ 4y
GingerAntics Right? I don‘t understand why history classes aren‘t taught like a giant timeline. You can have a timeline on the wall, have it take up the entire length of the wall. Then, as you go along, (ie 1800 America) what are women doing, what are men doing (that‘s the easy one), who are the biggest group of immigrants, why are they coming, what are African Americans doing, what are Asian people, Hispanic people doing in the boarders of what is now America 4y
GingerAntics As you can tell, I‘ve thought a lot about how I would teach a history class, to try and give as much of the whole story as humanly possible. I feel like it would be even more fun for world history. Big timeline, each century, what is each continent doing in each one. I wouldn‘t teach “the Christian people marched in and saved everyone.” Maybe that‘s why I‘ve never been able to get a professorship. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Oh well. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I agree with your timeline!! I did it if my life once for kids -they about passed out : women‘s rights civil rights Woodstock AIDS war etc 4y
GingerAntics Yeah, we do not need to shelter children from reality. They‘re not stupid, they‘re just small. Kids are impressed and interested when they know you‘re telling it to them straight. Tell them about all religions. Tell them about all gender identities and sexual orientations. That‘s what they‘re going to find in the world, we should be preparing them for it. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics my everyday motto. Also why people hate me 🙄 4y
GingerAntics 🙄 people are nuts. You‘re awesome!!! 4y

#XSUMMER2020 #MalcolmMondays

I finished watching this. Two things came rushing back, my childhood my parents always telling me to not believe what the news was saying or school about who killed Malcolm, that they were not telling me the truth and two my grandma always said he spoke like a man who knew God and he owned his mistakes and what he was saying was true. Seeing the documentary brought so many emotions for me. Anger for sure. What a loss.

Emilymdxn I really need to watch this! 4y
TheBookHippie @Emilymdxn I rewatched the movie also on Netflix first. Rereading the book a couple chapters a week on a reread has been really good to digest. 4y

Malcolm X grew to be one of America's most influential figures. But first, he was a boy named Malcolm Little. Written by his daughter

#XSUMMER2020 #MalcolmMondays

I forgot about this book. I read it from the library before so now I‘m going to order it so it stays in my read alouds.

Butterfinger I just purchased X a YA fiction about Malcolm as a boy. It's from the same author. 4y
