Survivor Song | Paul Tremblay
post image
Pickpick

In his story “Notes from the Dog Walker“ from last year's “Growing Things“ Tremblay was signaling a departure from his prior novels as his ambiguous endings could become something of a cliche. So, I was prepared for Survivor Song to be along the lines of thriller/horror. It def. falls into that category, but as others have noted with the current pandemic much of it reads like nonfiction. There's a sense of realism to the action that happens in👇

vivastory (cont) the book as a whole, yet underpinning it are occasional flashes of existential dread (“The sight of this sick, wounded, undeterred animal fills her with near-incapacitating dread and awe; an emotional-level recognition, or reconciliation, that the gears of the universewill always grind its adherents-apostles and apostates alike-in its teeth“) or arresting metaphors (“The man pushes the door fully open and presses Paul (cont.) 4y
vivastory (cont.) against the wall. He doesn't stop pushing. The man almost fully eclipses the white door. He is the dark side of the moon.“) Really though, this is a tale of friendship & how far one would go in times of crisis for our friends. I teared up a few times reading of Natalie & Rams, but also catching up with Josh & Luis from Tremblay's prior book Disappearance at Devil's Rock A wear-your-damn-mask pick! 4y
