Roadside Picnic | Arkady Strugatsky, Boris Strugatsky
post image

Saw the awesome #5movie post by @Tsubame this morning! Here's my international take.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped - French crooks and pianos
Hidden Blade - favorite non-Kurosawa samurai movie
Il Sorpasso - perfect Italian road comedy
Stalker - mind-melting adaptation of the tagged Russian sci-fi novel
Kontroll - Hungarian comedy-thriller filmed entirely on the Budapest subway system

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Have you seen Stalker? You should probably see Stalker. 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I love Tarkovsky. Especially Stalker (& honestly all of his films). I read Roadside Picnic last month. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Oh man, my hippy uncle let me borrow the two-tape VHS when I was in high school. Haven't had a chance to check out this new Criterion edition yet. Love his Solaris too. 7y

Tsubame I'm not much of a movie person, but man those look all awesome and I don't know a single one of them! Will definitely check out Hidden Blade soon, I love those old samurai movies and series! Do you know the Daichushingura dramatization from 1971? 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Have you heard of the 2005 French film "13 Tzameti"? 7y
Bostonmomx2 Excellent list! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Looooove that movie. I impressed all my little brother's film school friends by telling them to watch it and they all went crazy for it. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Tsubame No! But I googled it and I have seen Kon Ichikawa's '94 47 Ronin and I've read (edited) 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Such a simple, yet effective film. What about the 2003 South Korean "Save the Green Planet"? (I'm not going to even bother asking if you've seen "Snowpiercer") 7y
batsy Kontroll and The Beat That My Heart Skipped were brilliant. Have heard so much about Stalker, it's time to watch it. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory I have NOT seen Save the Green Planet but I love a ton of Korean movies. My favorites are probably Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring then The Good, the Bad, the Weird then Oldboy. (Of course Snowpiercer! And I love Bong Joon-Ho's The Host and Mother too.) 7y
vivastory I swear, our movie tastes are so similar it's a little frightening. I love literally every single movie you just named. I saw Spring, Summer etc when it first came out & it has stayed with me ever since. The Good, the bad etc is such a ridiculously fun film. I definitely recommend "Save the Green Planet" & "I Saw the Devil" (it has the dual distinction of being one of my favorite serial killer & one of my favorite vengeance films) 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Have you seen the films of Shane Carruth? Primer and Upstream Color? 7y
alanacristin Romain Duris 😍 7y
vivastory I haven't seen Upstream Color but will definitely check it out. Primer is hands down one of the smartest time travel movies I've ever seen. One of the few movies I've ever rewatched as soon as I finished the first time. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Upstream Color is the same way. It is a must watch! I have spent an unreasonable number of hours both rewatching and looking at timeline maps of Primer online. 7y
vivastory I will definitely check out Upstream Color this weekend. I think I'm also due for a rewatch of Primer. Plus Joon-ho Bong's "Okja" is on Netflix & I haven't watched it yet. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Stuff with animals and kids crushes me now, but I know I will have to see Okja eventually 7y
GatheringBooks i used to watch a lot of foreign/independent films - where has my youth gone? i am officially ancient. 7y
