I feel mixed on this one, the last seventy pages were deeply affecting and I found myself in tears and the depiction of life for black men in Louisiana in the 1940s was powerful, but parts of it also dragged. Jefferson is sentenced to die for a crime to which he was a bystander and his aunt enlists the local teacher to meet with him and impart his humanity on him so he can die with dignity. #40thbirthdaychallenge #1993

Jess861 I felt the same way about this book - it was a challenge to get through at times but an important story to tell. 4y

Hanging in the hotel lobby and sneaking in some reading while the car is pulled around. Want to finish this one - an Alice Munro collection and one other before the new year. Then I‘ll have completed my birthday challenge of reading one bool from each year 1979-2019. #40thbirthdaychallenge

Blaire @JenniferP looking back the books I read I think the 1980s were my favorite. In part because I had already read a lot from the 90s and 2000s before this project. I loved presumed innocent, tales of the city, and outrageous acts and everyday rebellions. 4y
Blaire @Christine @barbarabb yes, it was a fun way to expand my reading. 4y
Blaire @JenniferP also read a couple classic children‘s lit for 1980s BFG and Sarah plain and tall. 4y
JenniferP @Blaire neat, thanks! 4y

I remember seeing this series in airports...it was fine. A newspaper writer solves crimes with the help of his tow cats. This one involved a gourmet attorney who hosts artists at his mansion. People begin to disappear. A cute and fast read. The plot was too thin for my taste and the ends all tied up too neatly and quickly at the end. #1986 #40thbirthdaychallenge #roadtrip
