A Voyage Long and Strange
A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World | Tony Horwitz
6 posts | 12 read | 5 to read
The bestselling author of Blue Latitudes takes us on a thrilling and eye-opening voyage to pre-Mayflower AmericaOn a chance visit to Plymouth Rock, Tony Horwitz realizes he's mislaid more than a century of American history, from Columbus's sail in 1492 to Jamestown's founding in 16-oh-something. Did nothing happen in between? Determined to find out, he embarks on a journey of rediscovery, following in the footsteps of the many Europeans who preceded the Pilgrims to America. An irresistible blend of history, myth, and misadventure, A Voyage Long and Strange captures the wonder and drama of first contact. Vikings, conquistadors, French voyageursthese and many others roamed an unknown continent in quest of grapes, gold, converts, even a cure for syphilis. Though most failed, their remarkable exploits left an enduring mark on the land and people encountered by late-arriving English settlers. Tracing this legacy with his own epic trekfrom Florida's Fountain of Youth to Plymouth's sacred Rock, from desert pueblos to subarctic sweat lodgesTony Horwitz explores the revealing gap between what we enshrine and what we forget. Displaying his trademark talent for humor, narrative, and historical insight, A Voyage Long and Strange allows us to rediscover the New World for ourselves.

Book haul from an art museum book sale benefiting the SF public library 😄- for any Bay Area peeps, it‘s going on at SFMoMA tomorrow as well!!

erzascarletbookgasm Nice tote and haul! 6y
Aimeesue I loved A Voyage Long and Strange. Kind of like Sarah Vowell's Assassination Vacation in the way Horwitz travels around to visit the places he writes about, but more focused on the history. Great read! 6y

Velvetfur Genghis Khan!! I'm fascinated by him, what's the title and author of that book, please? Oh and I love that tote too 😊 6y
Velvetfur Sorry, I can see the title is Genghis Khan, but I'm wondering if there's also a subtitle 😊 6y
scowler1 That Genghis Khan book is great. I've read it twice and keep picking it up when I want to bore someone with a random bit of history. 6y

I am listening to this on audio right now, and it‘s so fun! Having grown up in the Southwest, I wasn‘t as unaware of Spanish exploration as Horwitz was before he wrote this. But if you‘ve ever been curious about North America between 1492 and the Pilgrim landing, you should definitely read this! #history #audiobook

Some may choose booze but this is my coping mechanism today. NOvember (not buying books this month) was going well but I have been too sorely provoked. And they were from a 5 forQ9 charity shop.

EmilyAnne Looks like a pretty good coping mechanism to me ❤️ 7y
LauraBeth I'm on board with this coping mechanism 😀🍨🍧 7y
