The Power of When
The Power of When: Discover Your Chronotype and Maximise Your Potential | Michael Breus
4 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
The latest research shows that there is a right time for all of us to do everything, from drinking a cocktail to getting a flu shot. The catch? That 'right time' varies from person to person. Fortunately, as Dr Michael Breus proves in The Power of When, learning to work with your body clock to achieve maximum health and productivity is easy, exciting and fun. When we stop focusing on the 'how' and 'what' of our lives and start focusing on the 'when', we reveal our body's natural schedule and unlock our hidden potential. In The Power of When, Dr Breus presents a groundbreaking new programme based on the most cutting-edge research for how to get back in sync with your body's natural rhythm. Filled with fascinating facts, true-life success stories, fun personality quizzes and easy to follow guidelines, The Power of When will teach you how to not only understand your own body clock, but the body clocks of everyone around you. After you've taken Dr Breus's comprehensive chronotype (body clock) quiz (are you a bear, a lion, a dolphin, or a wolf?) you'll learn to schedule your day for peak productivity and well-being. Whether you are interested in the nitty gritty of body clock research or just want to follow the big-picture plan and learn how to be your best, The Power of When promises to help you achieve your goals.

As one might expect from a book with a foreword by Dr. Oz, this is part science, part horoscope. I already had a pretty good idea of my chronotype from my wearable, and the info in this book roughly aligns with those data. I read some sections and skimmed the rest. The "best time to do x" chapters are the weakest and sometimes contradict information in other sections. Still, it does give me some things to consider about timing and energy.

In general, the topic of chronotypes and when to do certain activities is interesting and I think can be useful for things like sleep and alertness. However, I think when Breus started generalizing lab studies to everything and the kitchen sink outside of a lab setting, the book veered into science fiction.

Pickpick

Finished this a while ago. Borrowed it from my library and found it so powerful I bought a copy. Dr. Breus dispels the notion of "early birds" and "night owls" and breaks it down to 4 chrono types. A simple quiz on his website "sorts" you. The book provides plenty of research to support his thinking. The book walks you through the best times to do just about everything; sleep to waking up, asking for a raise to happy hour. This book is spot on.
