Thammavongsa has written two books of fiction, and both have won the Giller Prize. It's an impressive track record, and this was an impressive book. I wasn't expecting too much from a novella about a day at a nail salon, but I ended up really loving this. Engaging, witty, thoughtful, and subversive, Thammavongsa says a lot with a little. If you are a fan of short form, character based writing, I highly recommend this one!

Premise: Issues of race, class, gender, and power collide in this day in the life of a woman who runs a nail salon.
Review: This does exactly what it sets out to do. As such it‘s extremely successful. But I will say that I wanted a bit more from it.

#netgalley gave me early access to the audiobook. The narrator was incredibly easy to listen to and it was a short meditative listen about the hidden depths of a nail salon owner known as Susan. Because it wasn‘t a plot driven novel I‘d be more inclined to recommend it in print.
