The Shape of Water meets Mexican Gothic in this sapphic monster romance novella wrapped in gothic fantasy trappings The old keeper of the keys is dead, and the creature who ate her is the volatile Lady of the Capricious House?—Anatema, an enormous humanoid spider with a taste for laudanum and human brides. Dália, the old keeper’s protégée, must take up her duties, locking and unlocking the little drawers in which Anatema keeps her memories. And if she can unravel the crime that led to her predecessor's execution, Dália might just be able to survive long enough to grow into her new role. But there’s a gaping hole in Dália’s plan that she refuses to see: Anatema cannot resist a beautiful woman, and she eventually devours every single bride that crosses her path. That was fucking weird (complimentary). BUT NOT TOO BOLD is sapphic monster mystery romance with a strong Gothic undercurrent. Normally I find the "all vibes" for hundreds of pages of gothic fiction tedious, so this novella length was perfect for me. Do not read if you're afraid of spiders, or, conversely, if you love them so much you'd be distraught to hear of them being deep-fried and eaten. #QueerBooks #LGBTQ

I‘m not sure where my head was yesterday when I posted my May book bracket pick — but I need to revise it! My top choice for May is “Not Too Bold“ by Hache Pueyo. It‘s a hauntingly beautiful story: original, unsettling, and deeply moving. At its core, it‘s about love — the kind that embraces someone completely, both because of and in spite of who they are... WildAlaskaBibliophile It‘s a short read, but incredibly satisfying. I only wish more authors understood that you don‘t need hundreds of pages to create something this magical.

**My previous top choice for May, “Snapdragon“ is now a wild card selection. 😊

This was an enjoyable little creepy novella full of tarantulas. I liked Anatema as a horrific employer and love interest a lot, and the world was very well drawn for such a short book. What was missing for me was Dália, the narrator. At a few times she mentions feelings or thoughts she seems to have had for a long time, but never came up before. I didn‘t feel like I could connect with her at all.

I really loved this! A strange little fantasy novella featuring a spider monster that eats their brides and sets their sights on the next keeper of the keys. I wish it was longer because I really loved this world and was so intrigued by Anathema. I‘m not a huge fan of spiders, but this made me like them a little more. Has elements of romance and mystery that just really worked. A favorite of the year so far!
