A Family Matter

One family torn apart by secrets, prejudice and their own best intentions. Its 2022, and Heron, an old man of quiet habits, has just had the sort of visit to the doctor that turns a life upside down. Sharing the diagnosis with Maggie, his only daughter, seems impossible. Heron just cant find the words to tell her about it, or any of the other things hes been protecting her from for so long. Its 1982, and Dawn is a young wife and mother penned in by the expectations of her time and place. Then Hazel comes into her life like a torch in the dark. Its the kind of connection thats impossible to resist, and suddenly Dawns world is more joyful, and more complicated, than she ever expected. But Dawn has responsibilities, she has commitments: Dawn has Maggie. A Family Matter is an immersive and tender debut, at once heart-breaking and hopeful, that asks how we might heal from the wounds of the past, and what we might learn from them.

Oh, wow. I wasn‘t expecting the impact this story had on my heart. I didn‘t connect immediately and put it down for another book. I came back to it deciding to give it an hour then stayed it one spot reading until I was done. This is such a good read for Pride Month. I was essentially adulting in both timelines (1982 & 2022). Gosh, we cannot allow intolerance to take us back again.

As heartbreaking as this story was, I loved everything about this book!

The ending was perfect. The story was told with such care that I kept thinking about it when I was not reading it.

Loved! #arc

I‘ve been so intrigued about this one and I‘m on a book hangover after finishing my last book where nothing seemed appealing… So, I‘m going to try to start and finish this ARC before it releases in the US on Tuesday! #arc

A short but powerful book, covering a lesser-known aspect of British societal history. Set in 1982 and 2023.

In the more recent storyline, Heron is trying to figure out how to tell his daughter Maggie about the bad news the doctor has just delivered.

In 1982, Heron, Dawn and Maggie are a family, until Dawn meets someone new….

Once I started I couldn‘t put it down. 💛

Published on Thursday in the UK.
