A compulsive feminist reworking of Carmilla, the queer novella that inspired Dracula. "A dark, sensuous, gothic story of female appetite, ravenous desire and insatiable rage. A blood-drenched, glittering jewel of a novel that I absolutely devoured." --Jennifer Saint, author of Ariadne and Atalanta It's the height of the industrial revolution and ten years into Lenore's marriage to steel magnate Henry, their relationship has soured. When Henry's ambitions take them from London to the remote British moorlands to host a hunting party, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into their lives. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night. Carmilla, who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger . . . As the day of the hunt draws closer, Lenore begins to unravel, questioning the role she has been playing all these years. Torn between regaining her husband's affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk.

This was everything it promised, Gothic, sapphic, a bit twisted and well written.

Lenore is a wonderful heroine. She is unraveling, but you can empathize and pull for her. Her husband is both weak and horrible

It has been a long time since I have read a book with such a satisfying ending.

Ruthiella Sounds great. Stacking! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella I hope you like it! It is an unconventional vampire story! 2w

Oh dear 😅 I had high hopes for this vampire re telling , struggling down with some good gothic fiction which i love ❤️ but this is sooooo slow , yes the tension is there to begin with but compared to the excellent book Iv just finished the hounding , in this one the writing is v poor. Sadly not for me and sooo highly rated on goodreads !

My favorite read of July was Hungerstone by Kat Dunn—a feminist reimagining of Carmilla, the novella that inspired Dracula. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it couldn‘t top my May favorite, Not Too Bold by Hache Pueyo. That means Not Too Bold advances in my 2025 book bracket competition!

This is a rather boring retelling of Carmilla. The ending was good though.

Hungerstone, by Kat Dunn (2025)
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Premise: A Sapphic retelling of Carmilla set in Industrial Britain.

Review: This was a disappointment for me. A Sapphic retelling of an already Sapphic novel, retold in essentially the same time period (though a different location), I was left wondering … why? ⬇️

Mattsbookaday Everything in the new setting — the cruel industrialist husband, the poor little orphan girl abused wife — was just so OBVIOUS. Leave this on the shelf and just pick up the original, which is still accessible in all its Gothic subtlety. 5mo

Blimey, this debut novel is great so far. I'm obsessed with gothic tales, and this sounds amazing. It's a retelling of Carmilla, the novella that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.
I can't stop reading! 🖤 🧛‍♀️🖤

In this gothic, sapphic vampire story, Lenore is married to the chilly Henry; they happen upon a carriage wreck and a woman in white, Carmilla, who they take in. She turns out to be quite unusual. I liked the subtleties in this book and the gradual awakenings of Lenore.

Wonderfully gothic and atmospheric. I wanted to recommend this to all of you who have been reading The Woman in White. The author cites that as part of her inspiration. I read this in 2 days, which is rare. The build up is a little slow, and then doesn‘t stop. Identity, desire, hunger, rage, revenge.
