DebinHawaii @Godmotherx5 It's a good one! Coming of age story of a girl of Chinese descent growing up in Hawaii after WWII. Very local flavor with plenty food. 👍🍍🌴😀 7y
RealLifeReading I am always interested in stories of Chinese diaspora in different countries so I will definitely try to find Tyau's book! 7y

#Day4 #SeptemberPhotoChallenge #pocauthors I thought I'd use today's challenge to give a shout out to some great local female authors that were born/raised in Hawaii. There are many others but Kathleen Tyau, Nora Okja Keller, Kristiana Kahakauwila, & Lois-Ann Yamanaka are favorites of mine and aren't as well-known as other Asian-American female writers but are amazing and well worth reading if you want to expand your TBR list 📚❤️#somethingforsept

DebinHawaii @BooksForEmpathy It's OK--books can be your boo! Hah! ❤️📚 A Liitle Tio Much is funny & food filled and a good slice of life as is Wild Meat & the Bully Burgers-so those are the most fun. This is Paradise is a quick read, stories & is great. Any of those would be a good start. 8y
DebinHawaii @BooksForEmpathy On the more poignant, tough to side is Fox Girl about the outcast children left after the Korean War and Makai is about friendship, set after WWII & I bought Behold the Many after hearing the author speak at a writing workshop several months ago but have not read it yet. 8y
LeeRHarry @DebinHawaii I have read when When Strange Gods Call by Pam Chun and loved it! Fox Girl sounds like it would be a very interesting read 😊 8y
DebinHawaii @LeeRHarry I have heard of When Strange Gods Call but have not read it. I read Fox Girl several years ago & just bought a copy of it at the library sale to read it again. Very powerful and moving. It's not set in Hawaii but the author is from here & I had the pleasure of taking a writing workshop with her two years ago. 8y
