Artists in Crime
Artists in Crime: Inspector Roderick Alleyn #6 | Ngaio Marsh
5 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
In the movies, its known as a meet cute. But for Inspector Alleyn and Miss Agatha Troy, its more like irritation: On the ship back to England, she finds him tedious and dull; he thinks shes a bohemian clich. They may be destined for romance, but theres a murder in the way: No sooner has Alleyn settled in to his mothers house, eager for a relaxing end to his vacation, then he gets a call that a model has been stabbed at the artists community down the road. And the artistic Miss Troy is one of the communitys most prominent and outspoken members.

It has been a long time since I read a Ngaio Marsh mystery - reminded me a bit of Agatha Christie in that classic era mystery way. Enjoyable mystery about a murder at an artist‘s retreat.

Mehso-so

Finished up this #audiobook by classic detective novelist Ngaio Marsh. There‘s a lot of police procedure in here, although inspector Roderick Alleyn doesn‘t quite live up to modern professional standards (falling in love with one of the suspects, allowing a journalist friend to sit in on key interviews with him 🙄). My attention wandered a bit, but still a nice twisty #mystery for its time, even if I don‘t need to run out and find more.

I‘m rereading my Ngaio M collection. Marsh was an artist and there‘s a charged reality to the painting set-up but at the same time the murder is so entirely unlikely that it felt like an enormous joke. Are elaborate murders even written these days? #mystery

I'm dipping into the Queens of Golden era crime for a run of #recommendsday #wonderwomanweds posts. Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Allyn series were early police procedurals (unlike the "gentlemen detectives" of the other Queens). I raced through these as a teen, as many were set in artistic worlds. Light, fast-paced and ideal if you want a one-evening read. And check out her 'tude in this photo!

BookishFeminist Awesome choice! I hadn't even heard of this before. Love the photo too. 💁🏻 3y
