The Fetishist | Katherine Min

In this hilariously savage, poignant novel by acclaimed author Katherine Min, a grieving daughters revenge on the man who caused her mothers death sets off a series of unexpected reckonings. On a cold, gloomy night, twenty-three-year-old Kyoko stands in the rain with a knife in her hoodies pocket. Her target is Daniel, who seduced Kyokos mother then callously dropped her, leading to her death. But tonight, there will be repercussions. Following the unsuspecting Daniel home, Kyoko manages to get a rash kidnapping plot off the ground . . . and then nothing goes as planned. The Fetishist is the story of three peopleKyoko, a Japanese American punk-rock singer full of rage and grief; Daniel, a philandering violinist forced to confront the wreckage of his past; and Alma, the love of Daniels life, a Korean American cello prodigy long adored for her beauty, passion, and talent, but who spends her final days examining if she was ever, truly, loved. An exuberant, provocative story that confronts race, complicity, visibility, and ideals of femininity, The Fetishist was written before the celebrated authors untimely death in 2019. Startlingly prescient, as wise and powerful as it is utterly delightful, this novel cements Katherine Mins legacy as a writer with a singular voice for our times.

A smart book !It‘s dark yet funny at times ,the writing is evocative & beautiful. All three of the characters are musicians, mostly classical, young Kyoko plays punk. Kyoko wants revenge on Daniel , who seduced her mother, then dropped her leading to her suicide. While Alma, struggling with illness, involved with him too, wonders if she was ever loved. Questions, do some men fetishize stereotypical Asian tropes?Did he even know them at all?

Reggie This sounds crazy! Which is why I‘m stacking this. Great review! 3mo
Leftcoastzen @Reggie thank you! It is tough, thoughtful, sometimes funny. She really knew how to write! When the author was fighting breast cancer, she said I‘m done with fiction, thank goodness her daughter saw it needed to be published. Wish her mother lived to write more books. I want to read her first novel 3mo

I loved this one!! This was a very thought-provoking read about the fetishization of Asian women by white men. I especially loved how music played such a big role in this story.

This book was very unique and I loved how the complexity of relationships was presented.

It made me sad to learn that this will be published posthumously by the author‘s daughter. Added her first novel to my TBR. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
