The Water and the Wild
The Water and the Wild | Katie Elise Ormsbee
A green apple tree grows in the heart of Thirsby Square, and tangled up in its magical roots is the story of Lottie Fiske. For as long as Lottie can remember, the only people who seem to care about her are her best friend, Eliot, and the mysterious letter writer who sends her birthday gifts. But now strange things are happening on the island Lottie calls home, and Eliot's getting sicker, with a disease the doctors have given up trying to cure. Lottie is helpless, useless, powerlessuntil a door opens in the apple tree. Follow Lottie down through the roots to another world in pursuit of the impossible: a cure for the incurable, a use for the useless, and protection against the pain of loss.

I picked this up on a whim in a bookstore without having heard anything about it because the cover design was just beautiful- they don't give dodgy books covers this lovely. But even with the sweet cover and charming blurb this was an absolutely wonderful surprise.

This book is magical. ?

It's like Ormsbee went into my childhood, took all of the fantasy worlds that influenced me most, and combined them in one, masterfully-written book. This is "Alice in Wonderland", "Narnia", "The Neverending Story", and "Ferngully" all in one. With some "Midsummer Night's Dream" thrown in for good measure. Add some Walt Whitman and call me in the morning.

???? ☎️ ☀️?

This was a very sweet fairytale adventure story in which another world exists and can be accessed through travelling within apple trees. There's magic, there's intrigue and there's a quest. What more do you need? I highly recommend it! I hope there will be a second book!

I love that this character has the magical ability to taste words and alter people moods by what he says -"add my own words, and the mood changes -presto! - just like that. It's like adding sugar to cake batter or spices to a soup. I can figure out what added ingredients would switch things up."

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very intriguing! I'm going to have to add this one 8y
Bibliogeekery @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - it's quite a lovely little book! 8y

My sister bought this book - largely for the gorgeous cover - and I'm pre-reading it for her to see if it would be good for her kids.

Hobbinol Looks like a nice spot to pre-read anything. 8y
