Erosion of Democracy
Erosion of Democracy: How to save a dying Democracy? | Jitendra Dhopte
56 posts | 1 to read
This book is the first part of the Democracy series, a series of three books. Over the past years, the absolute number of democracies has been eroding. 70 % of the global population now lives either in non-democratic regimes or in democratically backsliding countries. The percentage of the worlds population living in high-performing democracies is only 9 %. Incumbent leaders are increasingly using force to crush opponents and settle scores, while beleaguered activistslacking effective international supportface heavy jail sentences, torture, or murder in many settings. The oppressive and often violent authoritarian forces tipped the international order in their favour time and again. The enemies of freedom have pushed the false narrative that democracy is in decline because it is incapable of addressing peoples needs. The impact of the long-term democratic decline has become increasingly global in nature, broad enough to be felt by those living under barbaric dictatorships as well as by citizens of long-standing democracies. Even though it is not the best, democracy is still better than any alternative form of government and so democracy must be saved and continuously promoted as a means to achieve security, stability, and prosperity for the entire world.

RELEASING TOMORROW - WHO IS KILLING DEMOCRACY?

When wealth becomes concentrated among the very few, the stage can be set for totalitarianism and the destruction that totalitarianism inevitably brings. The overall issue with capitalism is that it creates a level of economic inequality and political disparity between citizens and large corporations.

Releasing on SUNDAY, 14th APRIL – WHO IS KILLING DEMOCRACY?

This book is based on long research and in-depth exploration of the dynamic relationship between the states and corporations. It shows the impact of the corporate power over people‘s lives. It not only raises questions about the future of democracy but also offers various solutions for protecting and saving democracy, and various ways to defeat the corporatocracy.

Corporatism is a relentless process of influence-peddling, shadowy financial dealings, devious legal manoeuvres that evade public scrutiny, and destructive restructuring dressed up as “efficiencies” or “streamlining.”

Of the world‘s 100 largest economies, 71 are corporations while only 29 are countries.

The economy no longer facilitates human society; humans live to serve the economy. The logic that undergirds all of this— the greed for money, power, and control—is antithetical to preserving an environment in which living things can thrive.

People feel powerless. They believe that the systems aren't delivering for them. It is now common that less than half of the citizens vote, allowing anti-democratic politicians to be elected. People must understand the latent power they wield - their electoral decisions can alter the game of the politicians. They are not powerless, in any way. The “power of the powerless“ has a key role to play in saving democracy.

The hollowing out of democracy has been caused by a grotesque celebration of greed, the massive growth of inequality, a culture of cruelty, and a disdain for public virtues, all wrapped up in an authoritarian populism.

A majority of democracies continue to be non-egalitarian. Ideologies don't exist. The only idea left is gaining power by whatever means necessary.

Dear Litsy Friends,

Hope you are doing more than well.

In posting this letter, I exercise a fundamental right which we all cherish as a human being. Our current culture of divisiveness, hostility, and distrust has cost each of us profoundly. But hope not only exists in the periphery, but it also oozes all over the place. It is alive and well between each of us and, yes, our Litsy friend. Simply by being connected, we are one another‘s hope.

The economic microstructures created in the last 30 years transmogrify every human domain and endeavour, including humans themselves, according to a specific image of the economy. All actions are evaluated as if they have a monetary value: free speech, education, political participation. We learn implicitly to weigh what should be principles as if they were commodities.

The struggle to balance freedom of expression with public safety and the scourge of disinformation can further democratic decline. As social media play a larger role in politics, countries are struggling to address a host of issues effectively and responsibly, including fake news, foreign governments‘ manipulation of social platforms to influence public opinion, data privacy, the firms‘ monopoly of the market, and the firms‘ lack of transparency.

Desire and hatred – are the two internal forces or strong impulses which largely drives us. Most of our interests and most of our speech and activity are motivated by what we like, and what we hate. Thus, we are strongly pulled towards what we like and repelled from what we hate. For the most part of our lives, we are driven mostly by these two forces.

Democracy is at risk. Its survival is endangered by a perfect storm of threats, both from within and from a rising tide of authoritarianism. The covid -19 pandemic has exacerbated these threats through the imposition of states of emergency, the spread of disinformation, and crackdowns on independent media and freedom of expression. Electoral integrity is increasingly being questioned, often without evidence, even in established democracies.

In the end, every nation on earth is a nation of men. It always depends on the individuals involved. It constantly depends on what public servants really do and if voters actually hold elected officials accountable for violating democratic norms. There is a type of democratic disenchantment; as we have seen, people believe that the institutions aren't working for them in many democracies around the world.

Collectively, people across the world are losing faith in democratic institutions.

China‘s muscle-flexing in the East and South China Seas and Russia‘s brazen annexation of Crimea and stealth invasion of Ukraine showed that the rules-based international order built by democratic powers could no longer be taken for granted. In a globe divided into spheres of influence and power blocs, a country‘s ability to follow a democratic path will be determined above all by its international alliances and its geography.
