An eerie folk horror novel from the author of Cunning Folk, The Reddening, The Ritual, No One Gets Out Alive and the four times winner of the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel. 'A watcher may remark that after sleeping for so long, the building appears to have been roused.' Struggling with money, raising a child alone and fleeing a volatile ex, Jess McMachen accepts a job caring for an elderly patient. Flo Gardner - a disturbed shut-in and invalid. But if Jess can hold this job down, she and her daughter, Izzy, can begin a new life. Flo's vast home, Nerthus House, may resemble a stately vicarage in an idyllic village, but the labyrinthine interior is a dark, cluttered warren filled with pagan artefacts. And Nerthus House lives in the shadow of a malevolent secret. A sinister enigma determined to reveal itself to Jess and to drive her to the end of her tether. Not only is she stricken by the malign manipulation of the Vicarage's bleak past, but mercurial Flo is soon casting a baleful influence over young Izzy. What appeared to be a routine job soon becomes a battle for Jess's sanity and the control of her child. It's as if an ancient ritual was triggered when Jess crossed the threshold of the vicarage. A rite leading her and Izzy to a terrifying critical mass, where all will be lost or saved. "You don't read an Adam Nevill horror novel: you live it" The Guardian 'In refining the tale of supernatural horror to its essence, M.R. James increased the terror, and among his living inheritors is Adam Nevill' - Ramsey Campbell

I listened to this on a drive back from my hometown and it was what I needed. Jess, a single parent and survivor of domestic abuse, takes a new job she really needs to work out. She‘ll be taking care of an old woman at her vicarage. This book has inspired me to make a later month my own personal Adam Neville author a month. This was spooky, witchy, and tinged with folk horror. The writing was exquisite. 5, kept me awake on the road, stars!

batsy I've got an entire horror TBR based on your amazing reviews. I'm too chicken to have read any of them yet, but I'm sure I'll get there someday 😂 1y
LeahBergen Okay, the first thing you never do is take a job looking after an old woman at a vicarage. Just sayin‘. 😆 1y

Twainy Ooo he writes some scary stuff! 1y
Reggie @batsy Have you ever seen the movie Hereditary? It kinda was giving me that vibe. And this is gonna sound dumb but he wrote the most dreamlike nightmares in here. I loved it. 1y
Reggie @LeahBergen @Leftcoastzen I only know the ones that say you never say who‘s out there and you never hide behind that wall of chainsaws, lol, so thanks. 1y
Reggie @Twainy I was sleepy starting my trip back and this story made me sit up and pay attention. Very creepy there for a bit. Not only is this mother going through it with the old woman at the vicarage her abusive husband is still hanging around. 1y
AllDebooks Adam Nevill is a master at folk horror. The Ritual freaks me out 1y
Reggie @AllDebooks I‘ve only watched the movie on Netflix and not the book. Hopefully that changes this year, cause the movie was pretty freaky. 1y
CarolynM Thank you for the lovely Christmas card, Reggie 😘 Australian politics probably seems pretty tame to you😆 You‘re likely to see us Australian Littens getting worked up about conservative opposition to an important issue of indigenous recognition later in the year. Watch this space… 1y
BiblioLitten So interesting! 1y

Jess accepts a new job as a caretaker for an elderly woman. The woman is abusive half the time and non responsive the rest of the time. When her elderly charge takes an interest in her young daughter, I was just screaming for her to leave. Of course she doesn't, because she is too beat down by life and her abusive ex. The book takes an interesting turn, one I wasn't expecting. Overall I liked this book. It was short and fast moving.

This is an excellent short horror novel with well crafted characters and there's enough twists and turns to make your head spin.

I really like this authors writing style, he writes unputdownable books.

If you're looking for a creepy horror read, look no further.

Great storytelling!
