My Dark Vanessa meets The Queen's Gambit in this new novel of suspense about the bonds of family, the limits of talent, the risks of ambition, and the rewards of revenge. When former piano prodigy Saskia Kreis returns home to Milwaukee after her mother's unexpected death, she expects to inherit the family estate, the Elf House. But with the discovery that her mother's will bequeathed the Elf House to a man that Saskia shares a complicated history with, she is forced to reexamine her own pastand the romantic relationship that changed the course of her lifefor answers. Can she find a way to claim her heritage while keeping her secrets buried, or will the fallout from digging too deep destroy her? Set against a post #MeToo landscape, Rachel Kapelke-Dale's The Ingenue delves into mother-daughter relationships, the expectations of talent, the stories we tell ourselves, and what happens when the things that once made you special are taken from you. Moving between Saskia's childhood and the present day, this dark, contemporary fairy tale pulses with desire, longing, and uncertainty, as it builds to its spectacular, shocking climax.

I enjoyed the style and setup. Each chapter starts with an excerpt from one of the Fairy Tales for Little Feminists stories, followed by a flashback (which themselves are in chronological order), ending with the present day events. The audiobook was okay. The pace was rather slow for my tastes. It made the story almost drag when I didn‘t have the story sped up. Willis did bring emotion to the characters with her inflection and tone.

I think the snow falling heavy and wet calls for a modern day gothic.

1-24-23: My 9th finished book of 2023! I feel conflicted about this one. Former piano prodigy, Saskia Kreis returns to her home, the Elf House, after her mother‘s sudden death. The house is her birthright but her mother has bequeathed the estate to Patrick Kintner, an older man that Saskia has a troubled past with. It‘s a well written story but some things happen that don‘t seem realistic and the ending felt abrupt. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣9️⃣

I enjoyed this author‘s last book, so I dove into this one knowing nothing about it and it didn‘t measure up at all. The first third is an immature rich woman bemoaning the fact that she can‘t live off her family‘s money like she expected to. Then there are some revelations about her past which could have been quite interesting but aren‘t well explored. And the resolution is just bad. Disappointing.

Ok I have an official new favorite author! This author wrote The Ballerinas and I was there for every page. This one is no different. It‘s got total gothic vibes and an ending I‘m still processing. In any event ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

This had a really slow start but if you liked The Ballerinas by this author, you'll definitely like this. An heiress / former child music prodigy goes home to fight for her family legacy.
