Anywhere You Run
Anywhere You Run: A Novel | Wanda M. Morris
"Wise, riveting, and full of surprises, Anywhere You Run will keep you up past your bedtime and stay with you long after the book is closed. Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six From the award-winning author of All Her Little Secrets comes yet another gripping, suspenseful novel where, after the murder of a white man in Jim Crow Mississippi, two Black sisters run away to different parts of the country . . . but can they escape the secrets they left behind? Its the summer of 1964 and three innocent men are brutally murdered for trying to help Black Mississippians secure the right to vote. Against this backdrop, twenty-one year old Violet Richards finds herself in more trouble than shes ever been in her life. Suffering a brutal attack of her own, she kills the man responsible. But with the color of Violets skin, there is no way she can escape Jim Crow justice in Jackson, Mississippi. Before anyone can find the body or finger her as the killer, she decides to run. With the help of her white beau, Violet escapes. But desperation and fear leads her to hide out in the small rural town of Chillicothe, Georgia, unaware that danger may be closer than she thinks. Back in Jackson, Marigold, Violets older sister, has dreams of attending law school. Working for the Mississippi Summer Project, she has been trying to use her smarts to further the cause of the Black vote. But Marigold is in a different kind of trouble: shes pregnant and unmarried. After news of the murder brings the police to her door, Marigold sees no choice but to flee Jackson too. She heads North seeking the promise of a better life and no more segregation. But has she made a terrible choice that threatens her life and that of her unborn child? Two sisters on the runone from the law, the other from social shame. What they dont realize is that theres a man hot on their trail. This man has his own brand of dark secrets and a disturbing motive for finding the sisters that is unknown to everyone but him . . . Anywhere You Run had me hooked from the first page... Its a novel both tender and ferociousan absolute stunner. Lou Berney, Edgar Awardwinning author of November Road

Historical novel about two sisters in the Jim Crow era South. Marigold and Violet are sisters, each with their own man problems. For very different reasons, they both have to leave town, hoping for a better future against the odds. Liked their personal growth and found family connections throughout the novel.

Really terrific historical fiction set in the Jim Crow South about 2 sisters, one of whom is on the run after killing her white rapist. I‘ve not read Morris before but she really has a way with setting the time and place as well as family dynamics. Ripped through it in a single sitting.

4½⭐
This book was really quite good. The middle was a tad slow-ish but other than that it held my attention and stirred my emotions, plus that ending…didn‘t feel like it came out of nowhere with a bunch of crazy twists. The author kept things real and captured the tumultuous times with candor and heart.

It‘s 1964 Mississippi and Violet has just killed a white man. She knows what this means for her as a black woman and runs, but ends up with something in her possession that implicates some folks who start hunting for her. I really enjoyed this. Morris is now an auto read for me.

Another great read from Morris. This one was set in 1964, so in addition to being a suspense, it had the historical fiction element of being set in the 'Jim Crow“ south. The tale of the two sisters, separately on the run from things in their past and the depiction of the realities of their lives as opposed to what the 'law' said was an impactful reminder of my own privilege. Add that to a great story and this was a winning read. 4.5/5 stars.
