Better than Fiction
Better than Fiction | Alexa Martin
Love isnt always by the books in this charming romantic comedy about a bookseller discovering how to be the main character in her story. As a self-proclaimed book hater and a firm believer that the movie is always better, Drew Young didnt anticipate inheriting her grandmas bookstore, the Book Nook. Shes in way over her head even before the shops resident book club, comprising seven of the naughtiest old ladies ever, begin to do what they do bestmeddle. Bestselling author Jasper Williams is a hopeless romantic. When he meets Drew at his Book Nook signing event, he becomes determined to show her the beauty of reading. He curates a book bucket list in exchange for her help exploring the local Denver scene for his current manuscript. From river rafting to local restaurants, Drew begins to connect with Jasper in a way she only thought happened in fiction. When messy family ties jeopardize the future of the Book Nook, Drew is caught between a bookshelf and a hard place. Shes reminded that real life isnt always big dreams and sweeping romance. But Jasper is the plot twist she never saw coming and hes writing a happily ever after just for them.

The first half of this romance is a bit slow, and if it wasn‘t for our bookclub I likely wouldn‘t have finished it. However, the second half picks up and you start to root for Jasper and Drew to find their happily ever after. The beginning was a bit too tied up in family drama and the romance wasn‘t believable at first. But I became fans of it as it progressed. And it had a very sweet ending.

Drew is struggling to cope with losing her beloved grandmother while running her grandma‘s bookshop when bestselling romance author Jasper Williams walks through the door.
There were things I liked: their exploring Colorado, them actually getting to know each other, him helping her grieve, POCs
Things I hated: we get it Jasper‘s hot, miscommunication trope x 2, the reveal filled me with rage

Sweet and funny, this was a great escapist summertime read. Set in beautiful Colorado, a woman has inherited a bookstore from her Grandmother and is trying to deal with her grief while figuring out the business. Who walks in but a tall, dark, and handsome author who might just be the perfect guy. They challenge and support each other and their love story is a true delight. A little uneven in places, but so readable. #romantsy

I was with Drew as she tried to process the grief of losing her grandmother & tried to convince herself she wanted to own a book shop- convincing herself that her own professional dreams didn't matter-& dealt with her truly horrible father & forged a new relationship with her half sister & was a good friend & boss. I didn't like her but I respected her. I was with her when she opened herself to falling in love with a fantastic guy. But she lost

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ me when she freaked out & broke up with Jasper after learning something she didn't expect. Her reaction was completely over the top & I felt the author should have had the climax be something to do with her dad's shenanigans rather than an unbelievable, manufactured fight with her boyfriend. Esp since there had been a lot of build-up about her dad & that storyline simply fizzled out. I rounded up because it's set in Colorado! 🌲 12mo

" I haven't been able to grieve. And I don't want to. The sheer magnitude of what I lost is too big to be felt. If I even begin to let it in, I know I won't ever recover ".

It was cute, and I was looking for something light, so it worked. But the writing was cringy at times, and everything about the plot was predictable. I've read enough romance to know that it can coexist with good writing, but unfortunately this one doesn't live up.
