Complicit
Complicit: The compulsive blockbuster novel that EVERYONE is talking about | Winnie M Li
5 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
'Brave' Liz Nugent 'Compulsive' John Marrs 'Dazzling' Chris Whitaker 'Fearless' Anna Mazzola 'Masterful' Araminta Hall 'Powerful' Louise Beech 'Timely' TM Logan You know what it's like. A comment here, a closed door there, turning a blind eye to get ahead. My name is Sarah Lai. You won't have heard of me. A decade ago I was on the cusp of being a big deal. But that was a long time ago. Now, instead of working in Hollywood, I teach students about it. And these are the two most important lessons you need to know about the film industry: 1) Those with the money have all the power. 2) Those with the power get whatever they want. Ignore these rules and the whole system will crumble. Stick to the rules and you'll succeed. But at what cost? Ask yourself, what would you have done?

This is a complex story about Sarah Lai, a Chinese American, trying to make a name for herself in the film industry. She ends up getting in over her head with many powerful bosses. She leaves for a job teaching until she is approached by a journalist. Sarah decides that it is time to finally reveal the sordid details of life in the industry. It becomes her "me too" movement. It's a precautionary tale of being careful for what you wish.

One woman‘s story of making it in the film industry, the ups and downs and #MeToo moments. Even though it‘s a novel, I‘m sure it‘s all true.

The author was a producer and this story takes a long hard look on the imbalance of power and at herself and the complicity It took to realize her ambition, sliding step by incremental step. I work freelance in the industry; every woman has experienced this, at some point. Brave and revealing. Photo: black cat casting call for a horror film decades ago.

This book gives you a window into the world of film making from an author that has worked in the industry. It also illustrates how those with power can wield it over those who have dreams of careers in the business and how hard it can be to stand up the the likes of men like Harvey Weinstein. It is being touted as a thriller but felt like more of a fictional expose. I did however really enjoy it and gave it 4/5 stars.

Some of the characters did seem to verge on the stereotypical at times - North was supposed to be a Brit but his character could have been anyone from anywhere to be honest - but overall it was a well-written exploration of the tawdry side of Tinsel Town, even if the ending was a little flat. 3.5🌟

TW: obviously with the subject matter it contains mentions of sexual content & sexual assault.

OutsmartYourShelf My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Orion Publishing Group, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley
