The Troubled Man
The Troubled Man | Henning Mankell
The much-anticipated return of Henning Mankells brilliant, brooding detective, Kurt Wallander. On a winter day in 2008, Hkan von Enke, a retired high-ranking naval officer, vanishes during his daily walk in a forest near Stockholm. The investigation into his disappearance falls under the jurisdiction of the Stockholm police. It has nothing to do with Wallanderofficially. But von Enke is his daughters future father-in-law. And so, with his inimitable disregard for normal procedure, Wallander is soon interfering in matters that are not his responsibility, making promises he wont keep, telling lies when it suits himand getting results. But the results hint at elaborate Cold War espionage activities that seem inextricably confounding, even to Wallander, who, in any case, is troubled in more personal ways as well. Negligent of his health, hes become convinced that, having turned sixty, he is on the threshold of senility. Desperate to live up to the hope that a new granddaughter represents, he is continually haunted by his past. And looking toward the future with profound uncertainty, he will have no choice but to come face-to-face with his most intractable adversary: himself. From the Hardcover edition.

So a sad farewell to Kurt Wallender. A great last bow as he investigates the disappearance of daughter Linda's partners father, an ex naval commander. With a huge dose of cold War intrigue, I enjoyed this story, that involves soviet submarines and spys, while also noticing the detective's increasingly poignant loss of memory. At last I can try the TV series
I've put this in for #MarvellousMay @Andrew65 + hope to rd another bk before Saturday

Andrew65 Sounds a great ending, I am yet to start this series. Well done 👏👏👏 (edited) 2y

@Jenni_Capps

1. IT 🤡😱😱biggest book I've read
2. I like bigger books. But it depends 😉
3. Coffee ☕️ with milk.
4. Roobois tea.
5. Fave chair. Feet up.
6. I hit a slump when I only read now & then for years. But Henning Mankell got me back into daily reading ! 🙏🙏🙏 I'm forever grateful to him.

Jenni_Capps I‘ve never even heard of that tea 😱 I will have to look that up. 7y
Cathythoughts Sometimes they call it Redbush ? It's from South Africa, low in tannins, and they say they give it even to babies in SOuth Africa for tummy troubles. I really like it. You can put milk in it ( it's not that kind of herbal tea ). It's the only tea I like. I love my coffee most of all ☕️ 7y

#junebookbugs #fathers
I've been worrying about when to read the last wallander as he is a favourite character. He does however have a complicated relationship with his father, the grouse painting recluse, and his troubled daughter linda. I may brave reading it soon but will be sad to see the end of an interesting father/son/man.

The last book of the Wallander series, but my first Wallander. Then I had to go back, not to follow a series, but to follow a man , Wallander. I love Henning Mankells writing , I love how Wallander grows up & grows old. Lovely metaphors throughout.

slhbooks I read the Wallander series pretty much in order. I was so sad when I finished The Troubled Man - sad that the series had come to the end and sad for Kurt. Have you read Italian Shoes by Mankell? It's been a while since I read it, but I remember it as being quite good. 7y
Cathythoughts Yes I did read Italian Shoes. And also it's been awhile sinse I read it. I must revisit Mankell soon. Alas ! So many books to read !! 7y
cathysaid I watched this series on Netflix and loved it! Does Mankell have books other than the Wallander series? (edited) 7y
Cathythoughts Yes , he does have quite a few novels, that are separate from Wallander series. All good too 7y

So sad to finish the last Wallander novel. I've really enjoyed this series. Wallander is so flawed in such a realistic way that you're just always rooting for him. 😢💜

Mehso-so

I found this one a slog for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that my edition (Vintage paperback) ran to almost 500 pages. I liked the inclusion of submarines, and the family storyline was touching. Now I can finally watch the last season of Branagh's Wallander.

The Troubled Man | Henning Mankell

Wallander ponders his mortality:

He would stay in his house for as long as possible. When he couldn't manage that anymore, he hoped the end would come quickly. What scared him more than anything was an old age spent simply waiting to die, a time when nothing of what had been his life was still possible.
