You know, I really hope the next book starts out with everyone apologizing for the bullshit they put Taesia through in this book. While I didn‘t particularly enjoy it in the beginning, I ultimately loved this book. It‘s a lot, and it‘s dense, but it‘s really good.

I need the sequel already! This book was fun, and reminded me why I usually gravitate towards fantasy. The worldbuilding was fantastic, particularly the mythology concerning the gods and the different realms.

The four main characters here are the heirs to each of the four Houses mentioned at the start of the book. I wasn't attached to any of them in particular, and at first I thought it made for a slow book to let them each have their own

asterese chapter. But the way Tara Sim writes. Just read this, if you love fantasy, magic, stories of gods and monsters, and necromancer characters.

⭐: 4.75

"I do, however, believe that if we view those who rule as infallible—touched by the gods, and therefore sacred—we will continue to set a dangerous precedent for ourselves. It is one thing to show devotion for the gods. It is quite another to devote yourself to your people.”
