The Antisocial Network
The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees | Ben Mezrich
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
From one of our most innovative and celebrated authors, the definitive take on the wildest story of the year the David-vs.-Goliath GameStop short squeeze, a tale of fortunes won and lost overnight that may end up changing Wall Street forever. Bestselling author Ben Mezrich offers a gripping, beat-by-beat account of how a loosely affiliate group of private investors and internet trolls on a subreddit called WallStreetBets took down one of the biggest hedge funds on Wall Street, firing the first shot in a revolution that threatens to upend the establishment. Its the story of financial titans like Gabe Plotkin of hedge fund Melvin Capital, one of the most respected and staid funds on the Street, billionaires like Elon Musk, Steve Cohen, Mark Cuban, Robinhood co-CEOs Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, and Ken Griffin of Citadel Securities. Over the course of four incredible days, each in their own way must reckon with a formidable force they barely understand, let alone saw coming: everyday men and women on WallStreetBets like nurse Kim Campbell, college student Jeremy Poe, and the enigmatic Keith RoaringKitty Gill, whose unfiltered livestream videos captivated a new generation of stock market enthusiasts. The unlikely focus of the battle: GameStop, a flailing brick-and-mortar dinosaur catering to teenagers and outsiders that had somehow held on as the world rapidly moved online. At first, WallStreetBets was a jokea meme-filled, freewheeling place to share shoot-the-moon investment tips, laugh about big losses, and post diamond hand emojis. Until some members noticed an opportunity in GameStopand rode a rocket ship to tens of millions of dollars in earnings overnight. In thrilling, pulse-pounding prose, THE ANTISOCIAL NETWORK offers a fascinating, never-before-seen glimpse at the outsize personalities, dizzying swings, corporate drama, and underestimated American heroes and heroines who captivated the nation during one of the most volatile weeks in financial history. Its the amazing story of what just happenedand where we go from here.

^^in a nutty nutshell. And yet… the conspiracy theories about shutting out retail investors to protect a few big funds? That story is also easy to tell.

229 “the question Portnoy and others were asking was hard to ignore: Why did coincidences always seem to benefit the people in power?”

258 “coasting on a cushion of air as he spoke TRUTH into the ether of the INTERNET”😜

262 “ if anyone had gamified Wall Street, it was the American people.”

Mehso-so

“Disruptor stories” are maybe too mythologized—the established system surprised when newcomer‘s emotion, naïveté, or resentment becomes a threat. Mezrich adds artificial drama with snarky fictions (Musk neuralink, DID billionaire hedge funder Griffin own a throne made from skulls of vanquished competitors? ?). Who did Ben actually interview? Aren‘t free markets built on competition & failure? Who gets regulated and who is “too big to fail?” 2021

Pickpick

Building on blockbusters like The Social Network, Mezrich is one of my favorite narrative nonfiction authors. He has a way of bringing the people involved in these complex tech/business stories to life.

I came in not knowing much about GameStop or Robin Hood or short squeezes but came away knowing the people and issues in this complex web. For me, people are the most interesting parts of the story and that‘s what makes Mezrich‘s books shine.

Cinfhen I‘m intrigued!! Do you think as a NF junkie I‘d like this one??? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen definitely worth a borrow if you can get it! I also enjoyed The Social Network and 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m working my way through the rest of his backlist now. He‘s a great narrative nonfiction guy. All his books are interesting!! I have this checked out of the library, too, now but haven‘t started it: (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I read Sex on the Moon !! I really liked it and I‘ve read & enjoyed The Social Network!! I own Bitcoin on my Kindle so maybe I‘ll add audio narration. I‘ve also read this one and seen the movie - both are great 3y
Cinfhen How‘s your week been?? How‘s Miss Molly?? 3y

Very excited for this #NewReleaseTuesday! I‘ve enjoyed everything I‘ve read from Mezrich, so I‘m game 😉 to try his latest. I‘ve enjoyed Groff‘s short stories more than her novels, but I am still looking forward to Matrix. 🤞🏻 it‘s not a bail.

Part 2 coming in print this afternoon! 🥳

Cinfhen Punny!!! As always I‘m SUPER CURIOUS about both of these newbies!!! Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts 💭 3y
